David Sweeney ,missing baby boy?

Post by Anniespangles » Sun Sep 08, 2013 6:48 pm

Hi I am intrigued by what happened to a wee boy named David Sweeney. He was the son of Mary Jane Sweeney nee Moan and her brother in law David Sweeney. David Sweeney had a brother Charles sadly Charles died in the USA so Mary Jane and family returned to Dumbarton around 1897.She moved in with her brother in law David at 12 Levenhaugh St Dumbarton as a house keeper but in 1899 they had twins, a girl named Agnes and a boy named David. Come the 1901 census Mary Jane and her family have moved to Renton,Agnes aged 3 is named on the census but not the second twin David.I have trawled through SP with no joy :( Any help would be great,Ive been on this one for a wee bit now  :) .

Hi Annie,

He is there, but mis-indexed as Daniel, aged 2, in 1900. When you see the certificate, it is David, aged 1 4/12 years.

You can fill in a contact form in ScotlandsPeople if you wish to seek return of lost credits caused by the mis-indexing; and ask them to correct the index so that anyone searching in the future stands a better chance of finding him. As well as seeking his name to be corrected, they should really index the age as 1, as he had not reached 2 years of age.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thankyou.Iam amazed at how expert you have been in finding him and though I have a heavy heart to learn the wee one died of "supposed measles" (sounds dubious) I am very glad you have traced him, another little question answered. Thanks so much Anne :)

Just to add I have emailed Scotlands People to have the index amended. Thanks :)

Hi Annie,

My method was to search for deaths for surname Sw*n*y (to allow for the most probable spelling errors there), no first name input, in the county of Dunbarton from 1899 to 1901 for a birth year of 1899 ± 2 years. That gave me 9 results. The only one beginning with "D" was Daniel, so he was my first choice - and there he was.

All the best,

AndrewP
