Hello Janet,

Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh), Tuesday, February 12, 1856
THE MISSING VESSELS.—We deeply regret to state that no intelligence whatever has been received of three vessels connected with the north, which have now been amissing for some time. The first is a schooner, the Albion, of Craill, Captain Taylor, which left the Fife coast, for Orkney, more than six weeks ago, for the purpose of loading a cargo of potatoes there. No accounts have since been obtained regarding her. There were five men on board. The second is the Lady Camilla, of Thurso, Captain Crear, whose boat was driven ashore in Orkney some weeks ago, and whose dog has, it is supposed, been also washed ashore. She left London for Newburgh, with a cargo of guano, previous to the easterly storms which occurred early last month, and no farther trace of her has since been obtained. It may be remarked that on the morning of the Friday previous to the boat being cast ashore, and about eight days after the vessel left London, a schooner of about the size of the Lady Camilla passed this bay. She was deeply laden, and it was rumoured in town that forenoon, but not generally credited, that the schooner was seen to go down between Noss Head and Keiss. There was a terrific gale and a heavy sea at the time. Among the crew was a young man named Campbell, son of a widow Campbell, residing in Pulteneytown. The third is the sloop Breeze of Dundee, which left Pulteneytown Harbour, early in October, with a cargo of herrings, for the Rhine. Her crew consisted of George Groat, master, belonging to Pulteneytown, James Davidson, seaman, also belonging there, and James Houston, son of Mr Wm. Houston, mealdealer, Pulteneytown. Of coarse, it is even yet quite possible that accounts of the safety of the Breeze may be received, though there is reason to fear the worst, now that more than three months have elapsed. These sad occurrences have awakened a feeling of deep gloom and regret at Wick and Thurso. The Lady Camilla was quite a new vessel.—Northern Ensign.

All the best,
Alan

I see trusty Alan has supplied valid information.

There are a great many records for John Groat and others of related family in Caithness and in Westray on http://www.familysearch.org You may find some connections there that may be of interest, with one George Groat being born in 1660.

Many of those records are not transcripted from the original records, but are submitted by members of the LDS Church which may or may not be totally accurate, but may serve to point you in the right direction. Once found there at no cost, you may have a better chance at finding/verifying records on ScotlandsPeople.

Leading us to believe that 'your' Janet either married or died in the intervening decade.
Scotlands People doesn't have any relevant death showing so she's likely one of the 2 marriages in Caithness 1861-1871.
There is a death in the 1940's of a Janet Groat born 1854 +/- 5 that could be worth a look to see if it's her and who she married [Scottish Records are under maiden and married surnames]

I can only see 2 Groat girls in 1861 you mentioned finding Janet's 2 sisters what were their names and ages?

Hello Janet,

I would say there would be very many instances of family erecting tombstones, or adding the name to one, for someone lost at sea.

There is also a report in the Scotland column of the Glasgow Herald. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=F1 ... %2C1531090

About half way through this copy of the 1854 BMD legislation you’ll see that Scottish deaths at sea were supposed to end up in the Marine Register at GROS. Obviously that would not always work well when all were lost, and especially when the regulations were relatively new and not common knowledge. There’s no sign of him there. http://www.histpop.org/ohpr/servlet/Vie ... s&mno=4048

All the best,
Alan

Found her in 1871 :)
indexed as an ANDERSON
Piece: SCT1871/43 Place: Wick -Caithness Enumeration District: 6
Civil Parish: Wick Burgh Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Wick Burgh
Folio: 0 Page: 5 Schedule: 17
Address: 14 Bexley Terrace
ANDERSON Robt Head M M 37 Fisherman Caithness - Wick
ANDERSON Ann Wife M F 37 - Caithness - Wick
ANDERSON John Son - M 10 - Caithness - Wick
ANDERSON Jessie Dau - F 8 - Caithness - Wick
ANDERSON Barbara Dau - F 6 - Caithness - Wick
- Mary Ann Dau - F 3 - Caithness - Wick
ANDERSON George Groat Son - M 11m - Caithness - Wick
ANDERSON Janet Groat Niece U F 15 - Lanarkshire - Glasgow
It may be worth finding the Anderson family in 1881 to see if she was still with them then under either surname.

By the way - what happened to her Father Ewings Groat? I noticed the mother's death but not the father's, in Scotland at any rate. a very unusual name.
