Deaths and Burials
Hi, I new here. I've been searching for 2 sets of Great grandparents in Glasgow. I've managed to find death certificates for 1 set, but even after extensive searches through Scotland's people and having contacted St. Joseph's Church, where both sets were parishioners, I'm no further forward. Can anybody suggest anything else.
Thanks
Thanks

Hello Mary Kate, and a warm welcome to TalkingScot
If you care to provide names, places and dates you'll have lots of help in your search. There are many variables which may affect search results and members enjoy a good challenge.
We do ask that postings keep within our posted time guidelines at viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6601
There are separate indexes on ScotlandsPeople for Catholic Churches which do have records including some pre-dating the 1855 manadatory government registrations.
Have you tried any of the free sites such as: Frances

Hi Frances,
Thanks for the welcome. Your a long way from Glasgow
The families I'm looking for both lived in Glasgow.
They are
Alexander Ballantine, although I've also seen this as Ballantyne, it says on the 1871 Census I have, the first spelling. and on his death certificate. He died at the family home at 414 Argyle Street on 27th April 1947, his wife Mary, nee Moore, died before him on the 1st January 1945 at 414 Argyle Street. She was Catholic, I think he was Church of Scotland.
The other family is Joseph and Annie Hannigan. Both were originally from Conwal in Letterkenny. The first and only trace I have of the two of them is in the 1911 census, at 59 William Street in Glasgow, that's Anderston area. According to what I've been told they both died here at some point between 1934 to 1938. St. Joseph's Chapel have no records of deaths or burials for Mary Ballantine or Joseph and Annie.
I've tried all of the websites, including the two you mentioned, but , without success. I'm beginning to wonder if the Hannigan's returned to Ireland , but that's going to be for a trip next year if I draw a blank in Scotland.
Have a good weekend,
Marion

Scotlands People (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) has deaths for a Joseph Hannigan in Glasgow in 1948, and two for Annie Hannigan between 1940-1944. Have you looked at those? They are outside the dates you mention, but people don't always remember dates correctly.

Re: Deaths and Burials
Hi Isabel,
Thanks for the information, but ,It's neither of those for my Great Grand Parents. the 1942 death in Edinburgh is Joseph Jnr, my great uncle. The ones for Annie are not the correct age range, as I know from the 1911 census that she was 46, and he was 47.
I've been all over the Scotland's People website trying to track them down, I'm getting to feel like I'm hitting my head off a stone wall
.
Kind Regards
Marion

Hi Isabel,
forgot to add that Joseph Jnr's death certificate of 1942, shows both parents as deceased.

Re: Deaths and Burials
Hi Marion,
Have you tried using wildcards?
I found deaths of a Joseph and Annie Hannagan indexed at SP.
In fact if you search for just the surname with that spelling from 1911 - 1942 there is only those two.
This looks like them in 1901 at 71 Cranston St, Anderston.
Joseph Hanigan 38 Tailor, born Donegal
Annie Hanigan 34 born Donegal
Margaret Hanigan 15
Kitt Hanigan 13
Mary Hanigan 10
Joseph Hanigan 5
Nora Hanigan 1
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Thank you so much for the information. You've made my weekend. I never thought to add an extra "a" into the name. So, Joseph snr died in 1922 , in Springburn????, that's a question I'll never get an answer to, then Annie in 1924 at the Western, I knew she was in hospital, but I would have imagined it would have been the Royal Infirmary.
Thank you for the information on the 1901 census too. All I need now is to find out where the Ballantines and Hannigans are buried, I think that's a request for the Cemeteries and Cremetoria office at the Trongate.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Marion

Re: Deaths and Burials
Hi Marion,
Don't be put off by the 133 Balornock Road address in Springburn (I had a look at the 1922 death certificate) - that address was Stobhill Hospital. His 'usual residence' is listed below that - the same address you found the family at in 1911.
I had a look at the death announcements in the Glasgow Herald online archives for the week following 20-Jul-1922 and didn't find one for Joseph.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew,
I'm an idiot. Of course it is. I though perhaps a member of the family was living in that area. I keep finding family members in areas where I least expect them, never mind, it will keep me on my toes.
Many Thanks
Marion
