Help with Robert L Smith please :)

Post by GRG » Mon Apr 07, 2014 8:48 pm

I have been trying to trace the Smith side of the family. Currently looking at Robert L smith, born circa 1838 in Scotland.
One of the censuses sees him looking with his grandfather Peter McKinnon (b 1770s). I believe they lived in Inverness.
Robert was a railway plate layer and followed the railways south, dying in Sussex, England.
Peter also has a Margarate Mackinnon living with him-this was either the 1841 or 1851 census.
I would be grateful for any help (Scotland is so far away from me). I also believe there is a link between this McKinnon clan and bonnie prince Charlie-something my nan believes to be true as my mums cousin looks a lot like the paintings.
It would be on my grandads side.
Would anyone be able to help?

Hello GRG, and welcome to TalkingScot!

Perhaps you could give us some more information that may lead to us helping solve your mysteries.

The first Scottish census took place in 1841 and one every 10 years thereafter. You mention that Robert was living at one census with his Grandfather Peter MacKinnon. Do you know which year that was? Do you have a copy of the census? Does that census pinpoint them in Inverness, or was that another time frame?

Any information that you could provide, especially any public record to support any of the information you have given would help.

http://www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk can give you a lot of information, but it is a pay as you go service which is best accessed after you have some substantiated information, perhaps a marriage or birth certificate or a copy of the census.

Have you been able to locate any of the people mentioned in your post on https://familysearch.org/search? This is a free database where you might be able to make some preliminary connections that could then be substantiated with ScotlandsPeople.

Robert is living with Margaret McKinnon (who appears to be his mother), his grandfather Peter McKinnon and sister Elizabeth Smith in 1841 and 1851. According to the 1851 census he was born at Inverness and his sister at Croy. You can find both these records at Scotlands People or FREECEN.

According to somebody at Ancestry his father's name was James and there is a great photograph of him too. I'm not finding a marriage record that would match but of course that doesn't mean there isn't one. There is a James Smith living at Croy in 1841 but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack trying to find him after that.

Have you ever tried following his sister to see what the records say about her?

Regards,
Annette
