This is a mystery. I am fairly sure from the records you have found that he died between 1911 and 1915 but there is no obvious candidate in the whole of Scotland that I can see. Hope someone else manages to find the record for you. I suppose it's always possible he died in England or Ireland while away visiting friends or relatives.

Any chance he wondered down to Sunderland, County Durham? A john Mcmanus of the right age died there in 1913

Name: John Mcmannus
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 05 Jan 1855
Birthplace: TRANENT,EAST LOTHIAN,SCOTLAND
Father's Name: Patrick Mcmannus
Mother's Name: Bridget Mcgovern
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C11722-1 , System Origin: Scotland-ODM , GS Film number: 6035516
There are Scottish census records showing John Mcmanus including 1871 and 1881 census - the slight variation of the age may be due to the 'rounding up' of ages to the closest multiple of 5.
There may be others you may want to follow-up on that may shed some light.

That was only in the 1841 census, so shouldn't be a problem for this person.paddyscar wrote:...the slight variation of the age may be due to the 'rounding up' of ages to the closest multiple of 5.
All the best,

Re: missing JOHN MCMANUS DEATH
I did wonder about the death in Sunderland or the one in Whitehaven. If the searcher is desperate it might be worth getting both of these records, at the very least to eliminate them. However the paucity of information on English death certs might leave the searcher no further forward. Not easy to find this one at all.

Re: missing JOHN MCMANUS DEATH
thank you for the replies reference John Mcmanus. I did find all the census entries for him.I dont believe that he went to Ireland even though his father Patrick came from Boyle County caven, cos when Patrick died his parents were listed as unknown. So I thought there was no contact for that side of the family.the Mcmanus information dried up. I cannot think of a reason for John to travel down to England.Could it be he left the family and she put widow to make it easier?

Re: missing JOHN MCMANUS DEATH
If he died in Sunderland in 1913, then his wife was in fact a widow in 1915. He may have gone south for work, alternatively may be worth researching if there were special reasons for folks to go to Sunderland. Ancestor of mine who went South for work died in Cornwall. In desperation I bought the death certificate because I could not find any other possible death. Turns out he went to "take the waters" because he was not feeling well. Fortunately his son was the informant on the death certificate, else I would not have known whether of not it was his death. A friend later found a newspaper obit for him - have you searched any papers for clues?wassol wrote: I cannot think of a reason for John to travel down to England.Could it be he left the family and she put widow to make it easier?
