When applying for my passport I discovered that there is no record of my fathers birth, I know he must have had a birth certificate in the past for his passport application and other things - I have no idea what to do now, I don't need his birth certificate but I would like to have a copy plus it doesn't feel right that there is no record of his birth, is it possible that it has been missed when the records were computerised

Re: No Record of my Fathers Birth
Hello Zelda,
Welcome to
. I take it from your question that neither of your parents is alive to ask about this. What year was your father born? If he was born in the UK his birth should be have been registered. I'm not sure what you mean by saying there is no record of his birth? Was this an official who said this? Are you sure he was born where you think he was born and under the name you knew him by? Is there any chance that he may have had a different name at birth? If you know the district in which he was born it might be worth contacting the local registrar's office just in case a record made locally was not transferred to the central record. Have you tried searching for his birth in whichever country of the UK he was born in? Do you have a copy of your parents' marriage certificate which might show if there has been a name change or whatever.
Sorry, lots of questions and no answers.
Anne

Re: No Record of my Fathers Birth
No both parents no longer with us, I went to New Register House in Edin gave them all my fathers details, his name, date of birth, town of birth, parents names and they couldn't find him. My dad was born on the 14th Dec 1919 in Edinburgh, his parents were married 6 months before he was born, I am 99.99% certain of this information, as apart from his parents date of marriage my dad told me the rest and I know he had a birth certificate at one time as he worked abroad a lot so needed it for his passport and various other things.
I'm not sure what district of Edinbugh he was born, although he did tell me they lived at Yeaman Place when he was young before they moved to Surrey

Hi Zelda,
Could it be that his date of birth (or his parents' date of marriage) was not as he told it; and that he was born before the marriage of his parents? If so, he could possibly be registered under his mother's maiden surname. Have you seen his parents' marriage certificate? As the marriage date you have is more than 75 years ago, the marriage certificate should be available to view on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis.
All the best,
Andrew P.

Re: No Record of my Fathers Birth
Another possibility is that he was registered much later than you would expect. I had a marriage registered three years after the fact, so it is possible that a birth may also have been registered late.
Good luck with your search!

Being born in December could mean he was registered in January of the following year.

Re: No Record of my Fathers Birth
Have you tried a wildcard search on his surname? I have several instances of mis-spelt surnames - in the same group of siblings - ranging from 1913 - 1924.
Main lines: McCormick(mack); Connel; Others: McDonald; McFadzean; Brown; Kerr and many more
