To Boldly Go

Post by AnneM » Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:55 am

Hxi All

I'm just about to return from London and while there wavered greatly about whether to try visiting the National Archives. Yesterday pm I bit the bullet and went and can say that it was definitely worth it. Despite never having been before, I found service records for my 4 x great grandfather's brother Hugh McCallum, not that he particularly distinguished himself and a bit of further info about my 2 x great grandfather who was a merchant seaman for a spell. I think thatif I was better at this lark I could possibly have found more about him. The best however was for the kids and was the service record for their 3xgreat grandfather who was a gunner and served at Sebastopol and also in South Africa in the 1840s to 1860s. I got his birthplace and a description of him to boot. So any waverers there......just go!!

Anne
That sounds really worthwhile and I'm so glad you found so much information in such a small amount of time. Brilliant!

I have a very long list of things I'd like to do there! I wonder how I can possibly wangle a trip to London??!! :?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Tracey,
just turn up with some I.D. and you will get a swipe card. There are often coaches in the car park, but I've always managed to get a film or micro reader.

Mmmmm the 'celebs' sound as though they may be interesting but............. I know I should be happy but I remember what happened after the last series.

Looks like I'll have to speed up my research.
