RCE's & Death Certificates.....

Post by joette » Thu Nov 24, 2005 12:06 pm

Well my imagination is working overtime-not an unusual occurence. But in two generations of the same family-Grandfather& oneGrandsons there is no cause of Death given. The grandfather died in Hospital but I would still have expected a cause.
The two children are cousins one a two year old who was found drowned with A RCE.The other was 23 no cause, approx time of death but with Mother present. Also an RCE for this one.
I also found on the same page & not one of mine an illegitimate child with cause of Death- not known,Mother not present.
I know that Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character but surely the authorities were not so lax as to allow somebody to say "I found them Dead" & that would be that.
I know that I have fired off in all different tangents but that is how my brain works-or very often doesnt.

If the death was the result of an accident, or very sudden or totally unexpected and there had been no regular medical attendant in the previous few weeks, then it's quite often the case that the original death register entry gives no cause of death, - which is why there's an RCE entry, - where the cause of death will be given .........

Hello all

I have a death certificate with an RCE (haven’t seen it yet) for my gggrandmother Mary McLean/Davidson (ms Downie). It states she drowned in Monkland Canal opposite Greenbank Cottage Blairgrove. Residence 12 Gas Lane Coatbridge.
Cause of death was asphyxia by drowning –sudden. As certified by doctor who examined the body.
She was 73!

On DC it states see RCE Vol VIII p212 January 19th 1909
She drowned 23 Dec 1908, so a lovely early Christmas present for the family.
Why would there be an RCE if the cause of death was stated on DC? Or is/was it just standard procedure to do an RCE if the death was sudden or one such as a drowning?

How can one see the RCE's? Are they online somewhere...or can I purchase it from somewhere? I have a few of these and would like to see what was changed or added.

Even if the cause of death is stated on the register entry, there will most often be an RCE if the death was violent, sudden or unexpected. Even if it was natural causes if there had been no regular medical attendant in the months prior to the death.

You'll find this frustrating

The RCEs have been digitised and were planned to come on line some time ago, but problems have been encountered, and no-one seems to know any longer what the timescale will be.

In the meantime, all you can do is to get someone to look at the records on your behalf, on an amateur or professional basis. Unfortunately however, the digitised images are only available to staff, not on the public search system.

Thanks for that David. I will keep it in mind when I get around to searching RCE's. I am not concerned as yet; I was just curious.

Yes I think that I will have to take a quick trip over the Christmas hols.I am so nosey that I have to know what it says
I was thinking of suicide for the 23 year old of mine.Dont know why but it was the way it was written "around" 5:20,Mother at home but not present.! Ive never seen that before.
Its the fact that nobody investigated when parents said their infants had just" died".Sometimes Ive viewed three infant deaths on the same page at SP all with no Medical Attendant or any cause given. They tend to be illegitimate children & the cynic in me thinks the authorities were very happy that a possible drain on their resources has been eliminated & so didnt probe too deeply.I know that even nowadays with all our sophisticated scientific methods that some people including babies just die for no apparent reason.
Should we be clamouring at SP to put the RCE's online- a bit of Consumer pressure?

Dennis

I suppose suicide is a possibility, or perhaps just age got the better of her and she slipped on some ice and into the canal she went. Or perhaps she just got disoriented and fate took over. :(

David
Thanks for that information, I suspected that would be the case.
