Lost Ancestors.....
Can anyone help me to find 2 ancestors William Lyon b 22 November 1832 Methlick, Aberdeen and George Lyon b 29 November 1849 Methlick Aberdeen. I can't find either of them on the 1881 or 1891 Census on scotlandspeople website. I have found their brother Alexander Lyon b 23 December 1836.

Hi Heather,
Do you have you occupations for William & George? Did they marry? Their wives' names? Any children?

Hi Jack
Thanks for your e-mail and sorry for the time it has taken for me to reply but I couldn't get into the website.
I don't have any other information on Willilam and George apart from their birth details. However I have some information on the burial for their brother Charles Lyon and their parents Barbara Beattie and James Lyon. I therefore don't think that they died when living with their parents. I wondered if they have emigrated.

Thanks Drew,
You beat me to it! I was wondering about those children.
Sylvia, do you know what happened to these other siblings? Is it certain that William & George lived to adulthood, or at least to 1855?
One way forward is to go back and find the family from the 1841 census onwards. The name indexes will probably be needed - but when SP put them all online is another thing....
The 1841 won't give too much info, but looking at the family in all 4 census up to 1871 will give occupations at least.
These censuses would also show when a child went missing from a census - hopefully because of marriage, and the census addresses may help narrow down the area to search.
You could also try to find their DCs in Scotland - but what if they occurred elsewhere? That's why i think a look at those censuses would give a better idea of what was happening to the family over the years.

Lost Ancestors
Thanks Drew and Jack
I did have some of this information and I think perhaps William was living with a relative (perhaps Beattie) at the time of the 1841 Census. The information was in my last laptop which stopped working and I hadn't kept a note of it. I seem to remember that his surname may have been noted as Lyons but I am not sure. I have been trying to find it in the Freecen-rootsweb site but I don't seem to be able to access it.
There is another child, James Lyon b 1825 whose father is named as James Lyon but no mother's details. I am not sure if he belongs to my family or not. One of the witnesses on his birth data is the same witness on John Lyon b 1829 birth data - Adam Duncan of Sawchentree.
I found James and Barbara's son, Alexander Lyon b 1836 who married Ann Beange and their familly on the 1881 Census in Wick, Caithness.
John Lyon b 1829, my grt grt grandfather is on the 1851 Census in Inverkeithny, Banff.
James Lyon's father was named as Alexander Lyon on his death certificate but there was no name of his mother. I can't find any birth or marriage details for James Lyon. He was born around 1800 because he died in 1875 age 75. James was a tenant of a croft on the Haddo Estate known as Meikle Methlick from 1844 to 1883. His heirs continued to pay rent from his death until the end of the tenancy.
John Lyon my grt grt grandfather lived in Drumblade, Aberdeenshire. His son my grt grandfather William Lyon was born there in 1859 and married Helen Ross (previously Shepherd). The children were William Shephard stepson, John Lyon (my grandfather), Williamina Lyon, Jeannie Lyon and Charles Ross Lyon.
I can't find anyone who has any personal knowledge of my family and I would appreciate any help offered.
Thanks
Heather

Hi Heather,
The only James LYON (b 1825~) i can see is a tailor. Even if not him, it's quite a coincidence that you found a James who had the same man (Adam Duncan) as the witness to his birth as your GG-GF John had.

Have you checked the original entry for this OPR marriage? Possibly a transcription error? It is an outside chance though.
I know very little of the geography of Aberdeenshire, but looking at an atlas it's only about 12mls from New Pitsligo, and 18mls from Pitsligo Castle to Methlick, and whilst Barbara isn't uncommon, it's nothing compared to Jeanie or Maggie.

Hi Heather,
A couple i missed - they're nearer agewise. But James could be any one of the 3, or even none of them.

Lost Ancestors
Thanks Jack
How did you manage to find all these entries?
I think William Lyons is my William so he would be alive in 1841. Also neither William or George are burried in the family graveyard in Methlick.
James is a difficult one although his grandfather was a master tailor according to the death certificate of James Lyon b around 1800. Howeveer I will have a look at the other James Lyon entries you have found.
The entry for Barbara Leag is not a transcription error because she married again inn 1928. On her death data it states that she was previously the widow of James Lyon. She had a son by her first marriage to James Lyon who was also b around 1825 and died 1901. I am not sure if the James Lyon b Methlick 1825 belongs to my family or the family of Richard Lyon. Perhaps Richard would add his piece to this as we have hit a brick wall.
There was another James Lyon b around 1840 who died 20 April 1890 age 41 at Greenhill Cottage, Haddo. He was married to Jane Smith Fowler and it states on his death data that his father was James Lyon farmer rerputed father deceased and his mother was Janes Smith housekeeper deceased. We cannot find the birth data for this James.
There seems to be a few Lyons connected with Haddo House, Aberdeen as Barbara Beattie's daughter Margaret and her husband John Chrystal worked there Also Barbara Beattie died at the door of the dwellinghouse of Haddo. There were also members of the Lyon family from Tarves working at Haddo House.
Thanks again for your help.
