Catherine Dowds.....

Post by STUARTDALGLEISH » Sun Dec 11, 2005 7:22 pm

Hi Guy's

Going over all my missing information this week and finding a few names that I've been toiling over for a while. Does anyone want a try at this one?
It's Catherine Dowds mother...I think it could be McNaw, McShaw or McGraw...any suggestions. :?

Hello Stuart,

I choose McGraw. I would have been happier if the "G" had descended below the line, as in the registrar's signature, but I am almost certain that it reads McGraw.

Regards,

John

Hi Stuart

I agree with John. The loopy beginning of the capital G is pretty consistent and matches nicely....it's just the tail below the line that is not there. I looked for a marriage but I'm sure you've been there and done that! Looks like Patrick and Catherine were both born in Ireland and moved about a bit with a child born in Glasgow and then the next few in England and then back to Glasgow and then Catherine dying in Ayrshire. :D

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Stuart

Me again. The thought occurs to me now to ask what Catherine's mother's name looked like on her MC??....since it really looks like Patrick and Catherine were married in Glasgow....

PATRICK DOUD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 02 JAN 1872 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Best wishes

Hi Stuart,
I'd agree with John on McGRAW too. But if this is your couple, check the MC?

Hi all,

Jean, they were everywhere this lot and the name changed from Dowd to Dowds to Doud to Dodd, I think they were Gypsies (no offence to anyone).

Yes wee Thomas was born 1872 Glasgow and died 1874 South Shields
James was born 1874 South Shields and died Dundonald, Ayrshire 1885
Ellen was born 1875 South Shields, married 1897 in Glasgow, had a child 1900, went blind and died Stoke on Trent 1901 of a Cerebral Tumour
Patrick was born back in Glasgow 1879 and died 1880 in Glasgow
Joseph was born 1880 again in Glasgow but disappears but may have his death in Glasgow in 1954 but just can't confirm anything on that one yet.
Marie born 1882 in Dundonald then in 1891 census then another who disappears, mother and father now both dead......was she adopted/taken in by a friend/went to Ireland?? or abducted by aliens
Edward born 1884 in Dundonald and died 1894 in Glasgow.

Jean/Jack

Yes I've got the MC but I found it was even more confusing...I was getting all sorts of permutaions from Mcgragh to McGlagh

David/John Thanks as always
