WARRANT for a Marriage?????.....

Post by Wendy » Fri Dec 30, 2005 6:50 pm

Hello , I haven't been on much as my Dad passed away recently and research for my tree didn't seem important anymore...I have however just come accross some info that is very puzzling to me and thought I needed some clerification from the expert as its something I 've never run accross before..
ANYWAY ON TO THE STORY:
My GGrandmother Annie Paterson Anderson married William Alexander Moreland he died 30 Nov 1895...Annie came back to Scotland with 4 children (all by my GGrandfather William)...she then had 2 illegitimate children.....I had thought by John Campbell as we located them in the 1901 census in Cathcart .....now it seems she married her Mothers' BROTHER...YIKES....10 July 1905 a JOHN SPENCER...
NOW

I have the certificate and it states by declaration in precence of (I Think) Joseph Leichman , something something laborer ...and Jeanie Campbell Spencer ..(who I believe to be John Spencers' young daughter ) domestic servant....it also states warrant of Sheriffsubsstitute of Renfrew and Bute dated 10 July 1905???????
UUUMMMMM....
This would have been her Uncle she married...what does the warrant mean? as it states for a regular marriage signatures of officiating and witnesses..IF IRREGULAR Date of Conviction, Decree of Declarator , or Sheriffs Warrant.. I don't understand....???
ANYONE HELP

Thanks
Wendy

Hello Wendy

I haven't really an answer to your question - there are much better qualified folk nor me aboot - but I wanted to send my sympathy to you on the loss of your Dad.

I don't think the Warrant business is in itself necessarily sinister - I believe people used this means of marrying if they were in a hurry, as Banns didn't need to be called, but we'd better wait for the experts  I don't know about marrying an uncle though :?

Best wishes

Wendy

Do a search on this site for "Irregular AND Marriage" - the caps for AND are essential, and all will be revealed !!
