Death by drowning.....

Post by douglas » Wed Jan 04, 2006 4:15 pm

Michael McLaughlan drowned in the river Tweed on 2/1/1856. The death certificate says suffocation by drowning and then it has something in very faint writing that I cant decipher.

I've put the certificate in the gallery if anyone would like to speculate.

Also, is anyone aware of whether there are any newspapers from around that time which may have mentioned this death.

Here is the list of the Borders Newspapers on microfilm, with dates of parution:

Might be worth contacting
The Southern Reporter
High Street
SELKIRK

to see if they have anything in their archives.

Hope this helps

I think this a contact form to Scotlandspeople job as the writing is really indistinct & they will send you a copy of the original and/or refund your credits.I Thought it was maybe the signature, qualification of the medical practioner but it cant be as it wasn't a certified Death.I take you noted that the Death was registered by an inmate?Nosey me inmate of what?

Well while we're all guessing how about 'while in state of intoxication.'

I don't think I'd have seen any 'in state of' without David's post.

That's what comes from knowing the words and phrases to expect.

I don't go for "intoxication" as the number of letters doesn't quite fit, nor does the second "i" dot if it is indeed a dot, as opposed to the upper limb of whatever letter .................

Sorry David, I had my tongue firmly stuck in my cheek when posting, for that very reason!

Would it be 'in a state of aggitation"? I can not read any of the light writing following 'Suffocation from drowning', so I am just suggesting another phrase beginning with 'a state of'

I'm with Joette ... the writing is indistinct (possibly in the same pen as that used by the Informant, who had to write quite small to fit in the one empty line left by the Registrar). Ask for a crisp new copy.
To me, it looks like "while in state of ..... health", for what it's worth.
