Davids & others have often mentioned the 1855 Certificates which I have only today found someone who died in that year.
It made me get out my BC and my husbands.
He was born in 1937 in Stobhill Hospital but his BC says 133 Balornock Road, which I assume was the address of the hospital and Name, Surname etc of Father & Mother says usual residence 61 Queenshill, Street, Glasgow, Doesn't say Springburn.
Mine in 1939, Gives 24 Sheila Street, Glasgow. The suburb was Robroyston, Mine is also signed by Alexander MacKenzie, minister of St. Luke's Parish Glasgow. Obviously something my parents had done
They both give parents names and MS of mothers, my Mothers name was Catherine but there is a dot above both the i and e
I wondered what details are on todays certificates.
all computerised I assume

Hi Wini,
The certificates remained pretty much the same from 1861 to 1965/66. Then a new shape of certificate came into being - to use Microsoft terminology - portrait layout rather than the traditional landscape.
Initially these forms were handwritten, later typed, and the newest ones do look computer printed rather than typed.
A few years later (early 70's, I think), the marriage certificate changed a little. Instead of the ages of the couple, their dates of birth are listed. Also listed is a place of birth - which for the 1974 ones that I have includes a town name; all others since "Scotland", "England", or the like is given.
From 1966, a birth date (where known) has been given on death certificates as well as the age at death. The informant's address was not given fom 1966, but is given from 1972 onwards.
The informaton given on a post 1966 birth certificate seems not to have changed any from the previous format. Like the other certificates, the layout changed to fit the portrait format.
These certificates are easier for GROS to copy as they are all one per page rather than the two (marriages) or three (births or deaths) per page. I believe this will have made their DIGROS (GROS in-house version of scanned images, equivalent to SP) scanning and indexing easier.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Wini
Not really relevant but my mother was the registrar in Tongue Sutherland for over 20 years and I remember the care and attention she took while writing out the certificates etc for people. She had an ink pen which we were not allowed to touch! Later on my father became her assistant and then my late sister so it was kept in the family for a while.

Last week I had to provide identification for a police check for a Gov. department. When the lady came back with my BC, Drivers Lic etc. She commented it took a bit of adjusting to copy my BD (old landscape style), and commented you dont see many like this anymore
Yikes!, dont know if that was a compliment or a comment on my age
It was a 1952 Dunbartonshire birth registry

Apparently (i am informed) i am registered twice
(someone looked me up and told me !!) I think the reason is that my dad spelt my Christian name wrong originally. On the same sort of subject my dad (aged 70) has recently been having problems as the DVLA have only just noticed he spells his name different to what is recorded on his birth certificate and even worse he wasnt aware of the difference
Must check mine as i dont recall seeing an address on it - its a small square impersonable thing compared to older ones - c1963

Stewie,
You are just a baby.
Tracey,
I wonder if your BC is just an extract.
In West Australia, and I am going back to 1967 when my son was born,
you were only issued with an extract of the BC if you wanted a full BC you had to apply again and of course hand over some more money.
When I got my son's people were surprised and didn't realise they could get a full certificate..

Yes the shortened form of Birth Certificate was an attempt to save the stigma of illegitimacy. It was only the child's name, dob & birth place on it.You could have the full version but it was more expensive it must have changed in Scotland between 1963/1968 as that's when I remember the change in style.
So much for the swinging sixties!

The "Powers that be"
didn't like the concept of "Free Love' being made public although I dare say there was quite a few who thought it was O.K.
