Error in Birth Date.....

Post by ninatoo » Thu Feb 09, 2006 6:36 am

Hi all,

I have found an obvious error in the date recorded for birth for one of my ancestors. The child, Patrick McGinn Dogherty is registered as being born on December 30 1869. The date of registration is January 18th 1869. I think he was born in 1868, but the registrar made an error when writing the date because of the New year, and besides, he couldn't be born then as it was well after the date of registration!

What can I do about this?

Write to GROS and point this out. It could be well the justification for an RCE.

Thanks David,

I just wrote, but it I found it a bit unclear on who to send this kind of thing TO at the GRO. They had a correction of errors email address for marriages, but none I could find for births (or deaths). So I just sent it to records. I hope it gets through.

My message was received:

"I refer to your email regarding an amendment to the birth entry of Patrick McGinn Dogherty.

The entry has now been amended as requested.

Thank you for bringing this error to our attention."

I think the irony is that this birth, although occuring in 1868 will still be indexed at SP under 1869 as that is when it was registered...but then maybe not.

Do new RCE's make it onto SP?

In this case I don't know!! - it may well still be indexed as as present.

Probably !!, - is all that I can say for the moment. In principle the deciding date is the registration date, not the date of the RCE, but it still has to be sorted out just how this is implemented on SP.
