MCKINNON Birth on Tiree.....

Post by scotincanada » Wed Mar 01, 2006 4:59 am

Hello,

This is may be a bit of a fishing expedition, but my Dad has a theory about his mother's siblings. This family followed the Highland naming tradition to the letter, but there appears to be a name missing - that of the children's maternal grandfather. Where this name might theoreticaly have been used, there is a 4 year gap between births. My Dad is wondering could another boy have been born during this time frame & died early? This might account for the fact that no one had ever heard of his existence.

Who we are looking for is an Archibald M(A)CKINNON, born between 1885 - 1887, to Neil M(A)CKINNON & Ann PATERSON, either on Tiree or Kengharair, Parish of Kilninian & Kilmore. He would have died at one of these locations too between 1885 - 1889. Neil & Ann's first child was Donald MCKINNON b. June 19, 1884, on Tiree. Four years later, Neil MCKINNON was born on June 5, 1888. They were followed by 3 sisters, Catherine, Isabella & Mary. Long standing family legend says that a set of premature twins were born to Neil & Ann as well, along the way, but that's a question for another day.

Thanks very much in advance!

Distinctly possible. There may also have been a stillbirth, or a late miscarriage.

Stillbirths weren't recorded until the separate (closed) register was started in 1939. In the very early days of statutory registration, there are some stillbirths recorded in the death register.

Hi Mary

I've no credits left to view but a quick search on SP gives 4 births of an Archibald MCKINNON in 1885 one being in Tyree, maybe worth a look if you've not already.

Cheers

Stuart,

Sorry, my HYSLOPs were in Dumfriesshire before 1800 & were more or less natives of the area, I believe. Oh well!
