Hi all
Bit stuck with this one. Hoping someone can help clarify.
James Crout was born around 1800, England. (according to 1851 census) He was in the north of Scotland at Fearn, Easter Ross by Sept 1827 as he had a child then with Jessie McCulloch - the marriage was probably earlier that year or the previous year. They had 7 children I know of: Betsy 1828, John* 1832, Isabella 1835, Jane 1837, William 1839, David 1842 & Jean abt 1845. In the 1851 census for Fearn, James Crout was aged 51 and an agricultural labourer, living with wife Janet and children William, David and Jean. His birthplace is given as England. (*Son John Crout married Rebecca Smith my 3rd gr grandaunt in 1849.)
I have not found James so far in 1861 or 71.
In February 1860 at Forres, James "Croot" seems to have married again to Mary Ross (Jessie McCulloch must have died by this time). (Daughter Isabella married in Forres in 1864) His age is given as 57 at this time, and his parents are given as as John Croot, Labourer (deceased) and Elizabeth - her surname is not easy to make out - it looks like "Fibee" (deceased). Any suggestions welcomed!

In the 1871 census wife Mary Croot is living at 13 Butchers Street Forres, married, but on her own - no sign of James! A few years later in 1875 at Forres, James Crout/Croot died aged 75. His parents are given as John Crout and Elizabeth (writing fainter that last time, can't make it out at all!!) He is stated as being a Chelsea Pensioner & the death informant was his wife Mary.
I would like to establish his mothers surname and also find out where in England James came from. There is a James Crout on IGI:
JAMES CROUT Male
Christening: 16 AUG 1807 St George The Martyr, Southwark, London, England
Parents: Father: RICHARD CROUT Family Mother: ELIZABETH C022441 1807 - 1813
- but I don't think this is him, although I suppose there is an outside chance it might be....
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi lesley
if you ignore the dot , it looks abi like "Falce" ??
Closest I could see on IGI
was
JOHN CROOT
Marriages:
Spouse: ELIZABETH FULSH Family
Marriage: 14 NOV 1790 Eaton Socon, Bedford, England

But It could be something completely different !
