Hi Melvinboy

If the groom was illlegitimate but aknowledged by his father and had his father's name he would keep it after his mother married.
Or
If his mother was entering into a second marriage having lost James Lindsay's father to accident or illness he would be entitled to keep his name.

I don't understand the 'NO RELATIONSHIP' bit though unless her parents were Lindsays or Laws.
Have you looked on SP for a previous marriage for Jean Law or birth record for James Lindsay?
Either might give further clues which would solve the mystery.

Marraige Certificate

Post by melvinboy » Sat Mar 04, 2006 5:13 pm

Hi,
Thanks for youre reply,I cant trace James Lindsay's birth.I found the parents births Robert Gilmour b.27/3/1822 and Jean Law b.6/9/1833 they were married on 26/11/1852 only 13 years before James Lindsay married Janet Maxwell on the marraige certificate James age looks like 34 and Janets is 18,that was in 1865.That would mean James was born around 1831 before Jean Law was even born and Robert Gilmour was only 9 years old.If im not reading it correctly and James was 24 he would have been born around 1841 which would make Robert Gilmour 19 and Jean Law 8.It just doesnt make any sense to me at all,i have done loads on family trees for years now and this is the first time i have come across this. The bit underneath both James and Janets names on the marraige certificate saying no relationship is a first for me as well.Maybe someone can solve it,thanks again for youre reply....

Hi melvinboy

I wonder if it might be helpful for you to upload the certificate to the TS gallery. Some of our posters are very good at decifering certificates.

According to the SP Index the relationship was given from 1855 - 1860 . Maybe this registrar hated change. If you look at the column title it may say there.

I'm sure you'll have this but here is James in 1881.

Hi,

The online IGI shows the follwing children to James Lindsay and Janet Maxwell.
  • ROBERT LINDSAY - Birth: 15 JAN 1866 Kettle, Fife
MARGARET LINDSAY - Birth: 20 DEC 1867 Kirkcaldy, Fife
GEORGINA LAW MAXWELL LINDSAY - Birth: 18 JUL 1869 Auchterderran, Fife
GEORGE LINDSAY - Birth: 24 AUG 1874 Kennoway, Fife
The 1881 census gives the following family group.
  • Dwelling: Brotus
    Census Place: Cults, Fife, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203518 GRO Ref Volume 419 EnumDist 2 Page 2
    Marr Age Sex Birthplace
James LINDSAY M 40 M Kennoway, Fife, Scotland

    Occ: Limestone Miner
Janet LINDSAY M 33 F Kettle, Fife, Scotland
    Rel: Wife
Robert LINDSAY U 15 M Kettle, Fife, Scotland
    Rel: Son
    Occ: Limestone Miners Son
Margaret LINDSAY U 13 F Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland
    Rel: Daur
    Occ: Scholar
George LINDSAY U 6 M Kennoway, Fife, Scotland
    Rel: Son
    Occ: Scholar
Jane LINDSAY U 4 F Kettle, Fife, Scotland
So that gives some pointers for a birth year and birth place for James. It looks like Georgina (with the interesting collection of middle names) may have died before the 1881 census. The online IGI stops at 1875, hence Jane's absence fom there.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello again,

There is a Jane Law / Gilmour death on SP in 1892 that may be worth a look.
I think this is probably her in 1881.

Marraige Certificate

Post by melvinboy » Sat Mar 04, 2006 7:02 pm

HI AGAIN,
Thanks for all youre replies, can someone tell me how to put the certificate on to the discussion group.I have been trying all afternoon to find the death of James Lindsay but keep finding the wrong one.I found the death of his wife in 1922 in Kettle and she was a widow so he had died by then.I was going to see if it had the same names on his death certificate for his parents. He must have been born around 1841 according to the 1881 census. The families all seemed to come from around the Kettle and Kennoway areas, thanks again for all of youre help.
