Welcome to TS Claire
What was her husbands name ? If you have no idea of maiden name you may have to find her death certificate to give you clues to that one then you can start to look for the marriage.
Which are the first and last English census you have her on ?
For Scottish information go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and you will find
Births 1855-1905
Marriages 1855-1930
Deaths 1855-1955
census
1851
1861
1871
1881
1891
1901
All downloadable for a small fee.
Births & Baptisms 1553-1854
Banns & Marriages 1553-1854
Searchable but you have to order them
Wills & Testaments
Free Index Search 1513-1901 but a charge to download.
Once you have discovered this site you will find out how much easier Scotland is to research than England

Dear tracey many thanks for your reply!
she appears in 1871 in gloucestershire & then in 1881 moves with her daughter's family to Devon & is seen in 1881 census then aged 77 after that no trace the only d cert that might apply is 1888 in the area but dob is 1807 & not 1804 as on census so i'm unsure if it is her!
anyway I think you are right...I have ordered her daughter's marriage cert so will I hope know the father's name then I can go back to lok for a marriage & then at last find her maiden name!
many thanks Claire scott

Hello Claire
Maybe one for the future..You havnt found her on 1861 England census ? Searching the Scottish 1861 for a Mary Carr aged 60-70 there are only four and on 1851 age 50-60 there are nine so not to much money potentially spent on SP looking at them when you do find the husbands name.
Good luck
