Hi
This is my first message to your site, impressed with what I see.
Can anyone help find my missing G Grandfather Louis/Lewis Rae born in Scotland 1850/1855, He married Elizabeth Agnew 1872 in Glasgow, I have these certs, I also have all the certs of his 4 children, two of these children died, all born in Scotland,I have those certs, he remarried in 1887 to Mary McDonald marraige certs states he was a widower, (no trace of Elizabeth death) all his children born in or around Glasgow.
I have his Father and family on census but not Louis. his occupation on all of these certificates show he was a Sawyer journeyman.
I also have his dearth cert in England in 1908, his birth certificate is the only missing piece.
I have tried ALL the web sites
Thanks heaps

Hi Tricia
Welcome to the forum! You've surely started off with a toughie. I've been tracing these people high and low and still aren't positive I have the whole story. When you state you had Louis' father and family on the census...just which census were you referring to anyhow??
You see I seem to think that Louis was right there in Glasgow in 1871 with Richard the carter, the 2nd wife Margaret, and the sister Bridget who was born in Ireland and would die soon. He's named Luke is age 20 and is employed as a lab for sawyer. The birthplaces jump around a bit but you can find this same family under the surname RAW in 1861 in Kilbirnie. It looks like mother Ann might have died after 1855 but I didn't narrow that one down yet. I was tracking the birth of Sarah but I am totally out of credits!!! I suggest you go census shopping and see if you can find some more leads. The family was back in Ireland for the birth of Bridget and then back to Scotland but it looks like Louis aka Luke was born in Scotland....but unfortunately prior to statutory registration so proof of that might not be possible as the family seemed to stick to their Catholic faith.
Hope this helps!
Jean

Hello again Tricia
It's as I feared....the only births that got recorded under statutory registration I can find are these:
RICHARD RAW - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 14 APR 1858 Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland
JAMES RAW - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 16 DEC 1859 Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland
SARAH RAW - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 15 MAR 1856 Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland
and with my very last credit I was able to buy the search view of what I believe is the death of Louis' mother Ann...
1859 RAW ANN FURY F U KILBIRNIE /AYR 596/00 0081
Best wishes

WOW, what a wonderful group of people you are, thank you so much.
You are correct in the 1871 census this is Louis with Father and 2nd wife Margaret, I have traced all their children (2 pages on that census).
Louis and Elizabeth had John Alexander in 1873
Louis in 1874 (died in 1876 aged 2)
Elizabeth in 1877
Mary ann in 1879.
they are the only children I have found from this marriage so far. all born in Scotland
Louis and Mary McDonald married in 1887 in Scotland
Louis was born 1889 (died in 1889 6 months old)
Francis born 1890 in Ireland (also missing Grandfather)
Mary born 1893 in Ireland.
Louis appears on the 1901 census in England as ROE with the above 3 children, no wife, I assume Mary died but don't know where, possibly Ireland as she and her parents where all born there.(census states Ireland)
My Grandfather Francis is also untraceable no idea what part of Ireland they came from, I have written to the aurthorities over there to see if they can help.
Thanks for the infor on Ann Fury RAW. I just paid $200 to go census shopping today ///. I did find that all of Richard and Margarets Sons died except for Joseph, haven't tracked him yet.
Once again thank you for all your help, I apprecciate all the help I can get keep writing.
Best wishes to all

Missing G Grandfather
Hi to all
Thanks to tips from your board I have been able to trace Louis/Lewis Rae to the 1861 census all the family under the name of RAW and Louis is Luke, not hard to see why I could not find them, still haven't found his birth, but do know now it was 1852, so it has narrowed things a little.
Thanks again to a great group of people.

Hi Tricia,
Where did the 1861 census give for the birthplace of Louis/Luke? Was it Kilbirnie?
If it was Kilbirnie, the online IGI looks odd for that era in Kilbirnie. Batch C115964 lists the OPR births of Kilbirnie from 1820 to 1854. The oddity of that batch is that ther are 912 births (or mor likely baptisms) there, but I would estimate that about 75% of these are female. On that basis that you would expect about a 50/50 mixture of male/femal births, it is reasonable to assume that the IGI is missing a fair amount of male births.
So it is possible for there to be a record in the OPRs for him, but it is not indexed on the online version of the IGI. It may be worth your while visiting an LDS Family History Centre and seeing their full version of the IGI, to see if he is listed there. Or you could order the microfilm into there for you to check the OPRs for yourself to be double-sure.
There is of course the possibility that there is no record of him in the OPRs. As was pointed out in one of the messages above, if he was born into a Roman Catholic family, that increases the chance of there being no record in the OPRs for him.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson
