Hi,
I am looking for a death certificate of Robert Johnston (b. around 1828 - not sure where yet). He must have died between 1881 and 1902. The 1881 date is the marriage of his son John Johnston to Janet Whitson. The 1902 date is the date that Robert's wife (Lilias Deas) died.
His occupation is different, in the death cert it is given as baker (I am also sure there is another refrence to it somewhere else) but in the marriage cert (1881) it is given as something that I can't make out (3 long words).
I did a search on SP and found several people with the same name and died within the range 1881 - 1902.
As for the place of death I am unsure as his wife seems to have died at St Andrews when the family should be in and around Haddington.
Can anyone give me any help on this?
Robert Johnston.....

Hi
Have you tried looking for them in the 1891 census. Lilias is not too common a name so you may be able to find her as you know she was alive then. That would enable you to restrict your period of search if you find her given as married or widowed.

Have you tried looking on the census for him?
Looking for his wife would be easiest [ as you know when she died] and hopefuly, if he was alive, he shows up with her.
You have 2 to choose from [ assuming the 1881 marriage came after that year's census] 1891 & 1901.
That should give you 10 year chunks to search in.
Bear in mind though that he may have been dead in 1881 and it just not noted.
And remember that Johnston can vary in spelling [ Johnstone, Johnston, Johnson, Jonsson etc]

Hi again
There are 9 Lilias or Lillias Johnston or Johnstones aged over 40 that I can see. You should have an idea of her age from her DC which would help you narrow it down and also you may have some clue where she is likely to be so you should not have too many records to look at. A couple of them are in Shetland so I'd guess they're not yours or you would have found Robert more easily.

Ok I think I found her on the 1891 census. She is widowed, but I do not recognise the daughter
1891 JOHNSTON LILIAS F 63 ST GILES EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
Seeing as Robert was born in 1828, I subtracted that from 1891 and came up with an age of 63. This one is the closest one that I can find for Lilias.

Ok tried the 2 possible Roberts and none of them were the right one. Both 1889. So that Lilias is possibly wrong.Pandabean wrote:Ok I think I found her on the 1891 census. She is widowed, but I do not recognise the daughter

I think this could be your Robert and Lillias in 1881 which gives Robert a birth year of 1823 ish. I checked the 1841 census and there is a Lilias Deas age 12 living in Kinross.
