Marriage by an Independent Minister.....

Post by dmh68 » Tue May 23, 2006 4:55 pm

Hello

I'm new to this site and to family history research - hope I am not asking too stupid a question but could do with some advice on a marriage certificate which I have.

It's an 1857 marriage certificate where the bride and groom were married by an Independent Minister. Also under the "When, where and how married" part of the marriage cert is says "On the 5th day of June 1857, at Chessels Court, Canongate, Marriage (after banns) and solemnised between".

What is an independent minister?

I looked up Chessels Court and found that it is in the Canongate area of Edinburgh but it doesn't seem to have any church connections??

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi dmh68,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

In the column saying where the marriage took place, does it asay any moree about the banns. Typically, it would refer to banns according to the forms of the Established Church, ... the Free Church etc.

I cannot shed any light on independent minister, but wonder of he had left the church which he belonged to and was preaching outwith an organised church.

At that time, and up to at least the 1930s it was commonplace that weddings did not take place in the church. Many were in a house, most commonly the bride's home. Some were in the manse.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi AndrewP

Thanks for your reply.

There is nothing added to the "When, where and how married..." part of the certificate about according to e.g. Free Church of Scotland etc. But thanks for the info on people not normally marrying in a church at that time, that makes sense to me now for this certificate and others I have which I was wondering about....

Best regards,

Diane
