Brick wall.....
Can anyone help me with tracing my husband's family? His great-grandfather James Muir was born circa 1863 in Glasgow (don't know district). Parents James Muir and Janet Muir nee Dobson who both died before 1900. Can't find anything on FREECEN or ScotlandsPeople. Can anyone help? Have managed to find lots of other branches of the family but have hit brick wall with these.

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly. I got James's place of birth from the 1901 Selkirk Census and his marriage/death certs, which is where I got the names of his parents. Have started to wonder if they wern't married or maybe came from Ireland ... but where do I go from here?

Hi PB
I'd be tempted to track to track him back on the census - 1891, 1881, 1871 etc. I'd be looking at the places of birth of all family members. especially any brothers & sisters to see where they were born - and the parents, especially if you suspect there may be an Irish connection. The census might also give you some indication as to when the parents died.
I would agree that going on the parents' names there does not seem to be anything obvious on the IGI....
Best wishes

Hi PB
I've pulled a few Jameses out of a hat in the 1881 here! There are quite a number who would seem to fit without knowing a bit more about the family, it is difficult to know... of course he may have left home by 1881 - there are also quite a few James Muirs as boarders. Jean/Jean/Jessie are pretty much interchangeable and the surname could turn up as any variation - Moir, Moore etc.
What was James' occupation in the 1901?
Any look likely?
Best wishes

Re Brick Wall
Many thanks for all the info: I think the one in green font seems the most likely one as the parents are James & Janet Muir. I will try and look for proof.
Our James's occupation in 1901 was "pedlar" (scored out) and overwritten with mill worker. He and his wife had been all over the Lowlands (pedlars) before they settled in Selkirk.

Hi folks,
The 2nd "green" couple would appear to be James MUIR & Janet WOOD
Married 21 May 1854, Bothwell (IGI submission)
--
They are in the 1861 Old Monkland census.
James MUIR 30, b Bothwell, LKS
Janet 30, b Bathgate, WLN
Archibald 3, b Airdrie, LKS
James 1, b Calderbank, LKS
--
Jack
ps, oops - i see you already know!!

Hi PB
When did your James marry? And to whom? The 1891 might be better to try to find first - 1881 is maybe a bit of a leap of faith!
Best wishes
Lesley
that was only a small selection of those who were still with parents who looked like they might fit in - there were more Jameses!Doesn't seem to be any of the ones on the 1881 census.

Hi everyone
I'm not surprised if you've spent a fortune on SP....this is not an easy lot!
I hope you've noticed in your searching several things. First off James is not named as the father of Janet and William. Second off they (James and Mary) lied about their marriage date on the BC of John...but they did get married... in the Roman Catholic Church in 1900! I'm questioning the 1901 census stated birthplace of James! If his mother was a DOBSON that name certainly jumps out of all the records as Selkirk or Peebles area. The occupation of Woolen Mill Worker etc also rates right up there in all the DOBSON families I've looked at.
I'm still looking but if James is found I'm suspecting it will not be in Glasgow......I'd like to say that he may have been illegitimate himself and not born a MUIR but that is total speculation and can't be proven right now so DON'T QUOTE ME
!!!!!
Best wishes
Jean
