Post by fmackay » Thu Jul 13, 2006 11:56 pm

i uploaded a certificate in the hope that someone might be able to read the surname of Thomas Jobson's mother.
I know what I want it to be but can't quite make it out

Hi Lesley
Don't suppose you could stretch that to Hourston???
Of course the informant could have got her name wrong couldn't he? I was really hoping this might've been my man!
thanks

No, sorry - definately two "r"s followed by a dotted "i" in the middle of that word!

But yes, the informant might well have got it wrong... How reliable is an "occupier"?
Single man who has been in a "model" lodging - no close family around to verify any of it.
Or it was misheard maybe? - Hourston must be quite an unusal name.

Hi Fiona

I would agree with Lesley that it was Harrison.

I would treat that info with caution though. Did you notice his usual address as Cambusnethan Model. The person who registered his death was not a relative and if all they knew about him was derived from the meanderings of someone with arteriosclerotic dementia it could be wrong or at least corrupted. You may have hit on the right name whatever the record says if your other bits are pointing in the right direction.

Hi Lesley
Yes I thought that's what it said. It's probably a coincidence but the occupier who was the informant's name is connected to this Jobson family which is another reason I thought it might be the Thomas I was looking for!
Back to the drawing board
thanks again

I'd say he probably died in the Poorhouse.

I'll have a look for an application next time I'm at The Mitchell.

Hi Annette
that would be brilliant - thank you very much
What sort of records would be kept? Would it give any indication of parents etc?

I had a look at the poorhouse applicatios today but there was no application from Thomas. In fact there were only about 6 'Jobson' applications in total. One Thomas but much younger than yours.

Sorry I couldn't help.
