Wm Rielly's occupation - it is ? Trimmer? - it is __immer, is it __primmer?...or is it Spinner - the s isn't quite the right shape though
But with Mr Archer you learn something new every time
He & I go back a few years....

I'll probably live to regret this, but I'd suggest the registrar may be JWM Archer (she said tentatively...) working from other entries I have of his, on one of his better days, that's what it looks like.

Hi Dennis
I would go with Lesley's interpretation.
I think the spinnner bit is right if you look at the S of domestic Servant in the entry above. It may be Rope spinner especially as they are down by the docks in Leith.

2 Apr, at Roman Catholic Chapel - after ... forms of the Roman Catholic Church
Father: ... ____immer (deceased)
Mary Hughes: merino sorter
Mother: Rose Ann Hughes m.s. McElory
Witnesses: Matthew O'Reilly and Pat McGovern
Devil's Advocate
Could it not be John Rielly and John Hughes?
The marriage above is for William John Porteous, son of William , witnessed by William ____ Leith, and William ____ ? Each William is written in full.
This is a poor copy indeed, but William John Porteous and the father-in-law John Malcolm are fairly clear. Those Johns have the same odd squiggle that John Rielly and John Hughes have?
Afraid that I don't see the Registrar as Wm either, but then, I don't think it's John Archer.
Frances
P.S. 3 Rielly(s), 1 Reilly and 1 O'Reilly - what is the likelihood of them all being the same family?
