FERGUSON/HOGG MC

Post by Anne H » Thu Aug 10, 2006 7:28 pm

I've just received from SP an enlarged and clearer copy of an MC and will upload it to the gallery for James Ferguson and Janet Hogg. When it's approved, could someone please take a look and tell me if I have James' usual residence correct?

Thornhill
Bank (burgh) of Kincardine (or is what looks like "K" the tail of burgh above)
Blair Drummond
Perthshire ( or is it ------stone?)

Also, could the witnesses be Alan Paterson and Al Binnie?

Many thanks for looking.

Regards,
Anne H

HELP! Looks like I didn't upload the image. I've tried a couple of times and keep getting the following message:
NO FILE WAS UPLOADED!
If you have really selected a file to upload, check that the server allows file uploads
.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Anne

Looks to me like:

Thomhall
Parish of (goodness knows what! - but see below...)
Blair Drummond (but I know where that is, so off to look at likely Parishes! - Yep, Kincardine is a possibility)
Perthshire

Could it be H Binnie?
- I'm not cnvinced about Alan being Mr Patersones's first name either....the lines seem too far apart - with ref. to "After banns" in col 1

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for looking.

My interpretation of the complete MC is:

1870 On the Second day of December at Stirling
After Banns, according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland
Signed:
James Ferguson, Ploughman (Bachelor) 37
Usual Residence:
Thornhill
Bank (burgh) of Kincardine (or is what looks like "K" the tail of burgh above)
Blair Drummond
Perthshire ( or is it ------stone?)
Parents:
Peter Ferguson(e), Ag Farmer, dec'd & Jane Ferguson, m.s. Stewart, deceased

Signed:
X mark, Janet Hogg, (Spinster) 24
Usual Residence:
Larbert
Parents:
John Hogg, Time Keeper at Carron Works & Margt. Hogg, m.s. Mitchell, dec'd. (poor Janet forgot her mothers name was McKinlay)
Signed:
Wm. Findlay, Min.
Witnesses:
_____________ Paterson(e) & _______ Binnie

Maybe I'll just enter the witnesses as Mr. Paterson and Ms. Binnie.

Thanks again.

Regards,
Anne H

Thanks David...so Thornhill was a village. I thought it might have been the name of the farm where he worked as a ploughman. Looks like the population declined steadily over the years...I wonder if it declined into oblivion!

Hi Anne,
I still think it is Parish of Kincardine. :)
You mentioned -
"...enter the witnesses as Mr. Paterson and Ms. Binnie."
I've often seen two male witnesses on a number of MCs....
So always the possibility that Ms. Binnie was a Mr.

I didn't think Ms was invented then, surely - it would either be Miss or Mrs...

Best wishes

Hi Jack,

Many thanks for pointing out that it was the Parish of Kincardine. You would think that after it was pointed out to me three different times by Lesley, Russell and David that I would have picked up on it  …a bit slow to catch on, but now I finally have it in my head. So thank you again, Lesley, Russell, David and Jack! I feel like an idiot  !

As to the witnesses, Jack…it did eventually cross my mind that they could both be male (or possibly both female)...time will tell.

Regards,
Anne Harty
