Hi, Could anyone work out where in Moray (?) the Alex Wishart at the bottom of the page might have been born? I'm trying to figure out if it's Forres or not.

Thanks in advance,

Not the easiest to make out, not made any easier by the interference from the "gg" in the line above.
Moray, it is, but the only way to be certain of the parish would be to have a look at the original entry in the enumeration book...........
That written, and purely on the basis of elimination, i.e. looking at a listing of all the parishes in Moray, and eliminating names on the basis of shape, I'd go for Inverallan .....

Hmmm.....see what you mean, but how about Alves?, and that's always assuming, of course, that it is a parish name, and not the name of a place in a parish!Jean Jeanie wrote:Hi Scott
Like David, I looked at all the Moray Parishes in terms of the length of the name. Then I realised that what I thought was the first part of the parish name is actually "shire" (coming after Morray)
Therefore the name of the parish is a short name and I go for Forres.

First off looking at it all i could see was Barony Lanarkshire
- well i just thought if the man could spell Moray with two R,s he could spell Barony wrong too ? Then i looked on the 1841 which doesnt help because the one closest in match to him has birth place Scotland but he is in Barony Lanarkshire

Following JeanJeanie's comment re the consistent use of "shire" after the county name, as far as it is possible to determine on the quality of the image involved, I am persuaded (I love that phrase !Merlot wrote:Hi,
I changed this to a negative to see if it made it any easier to read. Didn't really help but I have to agree with David and say Inverallan looks good.
