Deciphering help, please.....

Post by catbug » Thu Aug 17, 2006 7:46 pm

Hello,

I've been trying to demolish a brick wall in my family tree for some time now and just when I found something that might help, it turn's out to be indecipherable! I have uploaded the image into the gallery, if anyone wants to have a go? I can read most of it but the mother's maiden name (which I've surrounded by a red box) has me completely stumped. It looks like the last letter goes over into the next column but I can't be sure. The person may not even be connected to me, although hopefully they are, but knowing the mother's maiden name might shed a bit of light on the situation. If anyone can help it would be hugely appreciated, as always.

Thanks,

Hello Cat,
Looks like McGill to me. You don't say what the date is on the certificate, but could this be the marriage from the IGI?

MARY MC GILL
Female
Marriages:
Spouse: HUGH GALLIGHER
Marriage: 13 MAR 1875 Malew, Isle Of Man, England
Husband Age at Marriage: 22
Wife Age at Marriage: 21

Batch Number M038091

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the reply :D . McGill seems quite likely now you've pointed it out, but I don't think it's the people from the IGI entry you found, as the date for the MC I uploaded was 1860 and for their son James. It was his second marriage and he would have been born around 1810, somewhere in Ireland (I haven't been able to find out exactly where, unfortunately, as I can't find any census entries after 1861 for him or his second wife, or their deaths). That was my fault for not giving the date of the image, sorry. Thanks for looking that up on the IGI, though. It does seem like a bit of coincidence so I might look into it further.

Thanks again for your help,
Cat
