Baptismal Certificates.....

Post by sheilajim » Mon Aug 21, 2006 2:03 am

Hi All

We all know that SP has Birth Certs after 1855. The Birth Certs give good information, but I was wondering if any more info could be found on Baptismal Records.

I was wondering if any Baptismal Certs are available after 1855 to the public. They might give a few extras, like added names, or Witnesses, etc.

Does anyone know?

Regards

Sheila

Hi Shiela

I dont know if this is/was standard practice, but my own baptisimal record (I was born 1952) is written on the back of my birth certificate. The only information regarding names, is the name of the meenister.

Quote:

"Baptised in the name of the Father Son Holy Spirit"
W. L. Roberts BA. Oxo(w?)

But of course I dont have any information on what Kirk records were held or what they contain.

Hi Sheila

My Baptismal cert is from 1944. :) It Says

ACCORDING TO THE REGISTER OF BAPTISMS KEPT AT ST CHARLES CHURCH PAISLEY.

it then gives my NAME,my dads NAME,mums MAIDEN NAME,and my DOB.
name of GODPARENT and PRIEST.

My last grandchild was Baptiised a few yrs ago,i'll see if there's anything different on that.

Cheers Nancy

Like Stewie when we got our two children baptised there was only a note written on the back of the birth certificate. My wife's baptism record is the same. I don't know if this is something solely done by the catholic church or not. I'm not catholic and was never baptised so cannot say from experience. I'd expect the church though maybe keeps a more expansive record of the event.

Information about my baptism (Church of Scot) was written onto my birth cert by the minister, who was on exchange from USA. His name was Raleigh M Inglis, and he had left the UK to go back home, but my mum sent it to America and he wrote a lovely letter to send back with my BC.

Hi
My christening was noted onto my birth cert. My husband and his sister, both christened in the next door village church, had actual christening certificates. These are very pretty, but dont give much more than the date and the minister who performed the christening. Also with the more recent nephews and nieces, they receive a small bible from the church with the date etc in them.

As far as I'm aware, while churches kept baptismal registers after 1854, that's all they kept, - with baptismal certificates being issued to the parents, possibly containing more info than entered in the register; or, as is evident from this thread, and I'm come across it many times, the baptismal details being entered on the obverse of the statutory birth register extract given to the parents by the registrar.

Hi All

I thought that there would have been two different certificates. One the Birth Certificate when the child was born, and then the Baptismal Certificate, when and if the child was baptised.

From the answers that I have received, this doesn't seem to be the case. :(

Thanks

It seems to be no set format. When our first child was baptised the witnesses had to sign a book in the vestry. At the same church for our second child two years later they did not. In both cases the baptism date was printed on the back of the BC but in years to come a record of the witnesses will only exist for our oldest child.

It's an interesting insight into how the churches work without a set universal format. No wonder the OPRs are a bit hit and miss also. Some things never change. ;)

Hi Sheila

As you can see from my last post,I had both a Birth and Baptismal Cert in
1944.My Godparent or Witness just happened to be my cousin, who lived locally,so it didn't give me any extra help with my searches :(

Cheers Nancy.
