Hello All
My gg-grandmother was married twice - the first time to my ggg-grandfather then after "disappearing" for about 20 years before remarrying. On this second marriage certificate (26/04/1920) he is listed as divorced and she is listed as a widow (Which is not true as my gg-grandfather didn't die until 1929) On top of this my gg-grandfather remarried in 1903 in England listing himself as a bachelor!!!
The marriage is listed as an irregular marriage with a warrant obtained from the Sheriff dated 26th March 1920.
Could someone please explain to me exactly what a Sheriff's Warrant was and how one was obtained for an irregular marriage? Was this because her 2nd husband was divorced? Did she actually have to prove that she was a widow or would her word merely be enough?
Sorry for the barrage of questions but I'm struggling to understand the whole situation!
Thanks
Sarah
