I found my GGG Grandmother Maria Ried (Previously McKay) (nee Withnall) on the 1871 census staying at 18 Shoe Lane Greyfriars Aberdeen staying with her was her Grandson James Davie aged 16 and Granddaughter Clara Davie aged 14 both say they were born in Aberdeen but I can't find any records of them, the only possible birth I found was for a Clara Mckay born on the 17 September 1856 in Aberdeen, the mother being a Catherine McKay (I do know that Maria had a daughter called Catherine). But can't find anything under Davie for either child.
Can anyone help?
James Davie & Clara Davie Aberdeen 1871.....

The only thing I can suggest is, that their mother married somebody called Davie and the children took his surname.
Though a quick look on the IGI doesn't throw up any likely marriages
to back that theory up.
Have you found the same children on the 1881 census ? the boy would be the best one, and if he's married look at that and see what his parents are down as.
~I did find Maria's marriage:
MARIA WITHNEL OR MCKAY
Spouse: JOHN REID Family
Marriage: 18 JAN 1840 Saint Nicholas Blotter And Scroll, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland
Messages: Extracted marriage record
So did look for a Reid mariage as well as a Mckay one .

The 1857 birth is illegitimate, mother Catherine McKAY, so this could fit with a Maria REID previously McKAY MS WITHNEL[L].
But then no trace of Clara............
There's a 90 year James DAVIE who died in 1944, parents James DAVIE and Catherine McKAY. In the 1891 and 1901 censuses he's shown as born Aberdeen ......... Pure speculation .............

James & Clara Davie
Thanks Davie thats my James Davie!
I could not tell from the death certificate so I requested his marriage to Susan Sangster which had him staying with at 44 Quality Street Edinburgh which was the same address as his mother plus the witnesses were William Aitken & Catherine Aitken (Catherine Aitken is Catherine McKay! she married William Aitken in 1868 in Edinburgh no mention on the certificate of her being married before) The certificate also confirmed that his fathers name was James Davie music teacher deceased, so I looked for a death for a james davie I found the death in 1857 aged 74! Catherine would have been 23!

Brilliant!!!
I recall seeing the surname SANGSTER during my look at this situation, but, for whatever reason, that name didn't make it through to my post !!
Great to hear that this has led back to the 1857 death record.
I had a reservation as to whether the occupation of music teacher fitted in with the various info that I was seeing, - just goes to show how one should always keep a completely open mind as relates to such factors !!
