Deciphering the Mothers-in-law.....

Post by paddyscar » Mon Sep 25, 2006 10:13 pm

I'd like some confirmation/clarification as to the maiden surnames of the mothers of Joseph Smith and Mary Grant, please.

I think they are McNally and Neish. The registrar's own name begins with the same form.

Thanks,

Frances

Hi Frances,

I'd go along with McNally and Neish - also using the similarity of the N in the registrar's signature.

All the best,

Hi Frances,
Yes I think they are McNally and Neish too. The "N" is exactly like the one in Nimmo the registrar.

Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Hi Frances

It looks like McNally and Neish to me too. To confirm their marriages I did a quick check and there is only one marriage in 1879 Gorbals that looks like your Duncan and Martha so that one checks out.

The other however is a bit trickier. You'll find it actually recorded in the index twice in 1864 Hutchesontown with two different spellings of Mary Ann's name.....McInally and McInnally so not too sure on that one :?

Best wishes
Jean

I thought it was McInally, but then I didn't magnify it to be sure....

An IGI search for Children born to Terence Smith and Mary Ann ???? yields 3 LIKELY results:

ANN SMITH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 29 OCT 1874 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

MATTHEW SMITH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 06 SEP 1865 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

MARGARET SMITH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 30 NOV 1872 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

All born to Terence and Mary Ann MCINALLY

Which, in turn leads to this:

TERENCE SMITH
Male Family
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
Death:
Burial:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages:
Spouse: MARY ANN MCINNALLY
Marriage: 05 SEP 1864 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

These are all extracts.

On the other side Mary was born about 1880 and there is a marriage for a Duncan Grant to a Martha Neish in 1879. There were only 3 results searching for Duncan Grant and Martha without her surname.

So with a wee bit of searching it's possible to find out unreadable or uncertain names just by looking at different sources.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thanks everyone for your replies and confirmations.

Andy - I didn't even think about IGI. I was stumped when I saw the initial letter of the names. My own 'N' is remarkably similar, but I have been told it looks like an "L", so thought best to have my own prejudices cleared.

Thanks for the follow-up.
