Taken aback & need a point in right direction please

Post by Jockbird » Tue Oct 10, 2006 1:08 pm

I've just looked up the death cert for my great-grandfather and, very sadly, found that his death was apparently suicide.

There are RCE details in the left hand margin, Vol 4 Page 86, 28th February 1946.

I'm very shocked & taken aback so my brain isn't functioning too well but where do i go from here?

Can this be looked up at NRH or Park circus?

Many thanks

Donna

As I understand it, from other posts on here, if you order the extract from SP the RCE is usually printed on the back of it.

Thanks Mary,

I just wondered if that, seeing I have a soft copy of the certificate, I could just get the RCE or if it's something that could be looked up in person.

If it can't be done that way then I'll order via SP.

Best wishes

I assume you should be able to look it up in person as well.

I'm building a bit of a list of OPR's I want to see rather than order them online mainly because, with some of them, I'm being presented with a list of possibles and can't afford to order them all :(

Come the New Year I'll be getting a trip up there organised so that I can do it.

If you've got other things you want to look up personally, it would be more economic to wait till then.

Hi Donna

You can look up RCEs in person at NRH. I have done this before for a relative who had been found dead at home by a neighbour and unforunately the RCE didnt say much more than the death cert itself.

I would say its worth having a look though :!:

Hello All,

Many thanks for your replies.

If I knew there was going to be more info for definite I'd pay the £10 but I think I'll hang fire and perhaps see if the local paper had any more info.

I'm still a bit unnerved by it, it's my first suicide.

Best wishes

hello Donna,

My gran gassed herself (very shocking and I thought I was prepared as I had been told she committed suicide).

I looked at the RCE while visiting Park Circus and the wording on her death entry from SP was exactly the same as the RCE. I would agree with everyone else that it probably won't be worth paying the extra money.

Hi Annette,

Sorry about your Gran. It's a very strange feeling you get when you see those words, especially when it is family. The death cert says he cut his throat.

I think I will give it a miss for ordering the extract but will bear it in mind if ever I get to NRH/Park Circus.

Very sad. Think I'll go back to Births & Marriages for a bit.

Were it me, I'd be inclined not to dwell on it. It's unlikely you'll ever find out the circumstances that led to such a sad decision on his part.

You are aware of it now, and saddened by it, I realise that, but let that part of the past stay there - in the past.
