G’day all,
Could some kind person help me find the Death Record of AGNES STIRLING m.s. SCOTT.
Her husband JOHN STIRLING died 10 Dec 1870 aged 42 years.
She appears in the 1871 Census in Haggs Denny Stirlingshire with children:
AGNES (the census taker made a mess of her surname but I am sure it is her) widow 40
JAMES 19
AGNES 15
WILLIAM 13
JOHN 5
AGNES was possibly 42 as the 1855 Birth Record of daughter AGNES records her as 27
She was still alive in 1876 when daughter AGNES married ANDREW FRAME on 29 Dec 1876
I think she is still in Haggs in 1881
Dwelling: Haggs
Census Place: Denny, Stirling, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203537 GRO Ref Volume 476-2 EnumDist 2 Page 6
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Agnes STIRLING W 52 F Denny, Stirling, Scotland
John STIRLING 15 M Denny, Stirling, Scotland
After that she simply disappears!
I have looked for a Death Record in both AGNES STIRLING and AGNES SCOTT but cannot seem to find her.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Fiona

All I can think of for the moment is to be patient for only a few weeks until the new improved washes whiter scotlandspeople site is up and running.
It will have a female death index cross check facility, so that as long as whoever was the informant for this death reported the info, and it was indexed correctly, it will be possible to do a crosscheck search just using the surnames STIRLING and SCOTT, in case there was something different with the given name.

Re: Agnes Stirling ms Scott
Hello Fiona,
David quite rightly points out the limitations of a two-surname search: the informant had to convey the information to the registrar. In this case, a search on Stirling and Scott would not find the correct person, but I shall return to that. I had started with a search on each names for ages a few years each side of 1828 but no matches turned up.
The next stage is to find out if she was living with her offspring in her old age. The best bet seemed to be daughter Agnes, but the Frame family seems to disappear after 1891 (Dalziel).
Sons William and John were not found in 1891 and 1901, except for a red herring being another John Stirling who was an iron moulder in Haggs in 1891.
The next stage was to look for deaths of offspring to narrow down the potential death years for Agnes. Daughter Agnes I could not find, but son John died single in 1933 (Stirling), and William died in 1934 (Kilsyth). Of course, William was the last that I searched for, since he provided the clues. He was married twice, to Agnes Scott (really!) and Janet Anderson or (hard to decipher).
I found William's marriage to Agnes Scott (his cousin) in 1884 (New Monkland) and this Agnes' death in 1889 (also New Monkland). William re-married quickly (5 weeks) to Janet Douglas (her mother was an Anderson), and here was the vital clue. His mother was Agnes Marshall, previously Stirling, ms Scott.
This brought the 1886 marriage in Cumbernauld of Agnes Scott (widow) and Henry Marshall (widower), but no mention of their previous spouses.
They were back in Haggs for the 1891 census, but Agnes was missing for 1901. A search brought up her death in 1899 in Haggs, but widower Henry gave her name as Agnes Marshall and her parents' names, but no mention of Stirling. So a cross-search on Stirling and Scott would not have found her.
Time for a rest: I have kept returning to this throughout the day!
Regards,
John

Re Agnes Stirling m.s. Scott
Thank you Davie for your reply.
Thank you so much John for all that information.
I had looked at the two elder children MARGARET who married JAMES LENNIE and was in Kilmarnock in 1881 with WILLIAM and JAMES STIRLING's wife JANET and her children. And I knew that daughter AGNES (my ggrandmother) was married to ANDREW FRAME and that they left to live in South Africa between 1891 and 1900. (They both returned without their children some time between 1910 and 1920.)
I am so grateful for all this new information.
Regards, Fiona
