IGI birth/christening reads 'Associate Session'.....

Post by Dennis » Sun Apr 17, 2005 11:57 pm

What is an Associate Session?

It is for a Helen <wright> 24 DEC 1848 Associate Session, Methven, Perth, Scotland

Why the brackets around the surname? The other children do not have that feature.

The Associate Session Church was one of the smaller churches on the go at that time. The records for the Methven Associate Session Church are in the National Archives of Scotland, rather than next door in New Register House, so they are not amongst the OPRs (which were from the (Established) Church of Scotland). So, unfortunately for you, you cannot expect these to come online at ScotlandsPeople in the forseeable future.

From the NAS online index:
  • CountryCode GB
    RepCode 234
    Repository National Archives of Scotland
    RefNo CH3/444
Title Methven Associate Session (later United Presbyterian and United Free)
    Date 1751-1930
    AccessStatus Open
On the IGI there is a batch number and it says it is on film, so you could ask at the LDS Family History Centre if they could get that microfilm in for you.

As for the brackets, I am not sure. I had wondered if the parents were unmarried at the time, but no, they were married five months earlier in July 1848 (the IGI shows the marriage as listed in the OPR).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Re-Brackets

If I remember correctly-and I may not, the brackets signify a bit more information than usual for a parish register entry. There's an explanation of the symbols at the beginning of the Scottish Parish Records disc at the Local Family History Centres.

Thank you Andrew & Ian for the informative replies to my questions. I'll check with my local LDS office for the suggestions you have provided:)
