Hi Denis
...welcome to Talking Scot :D

Have you found your James Gunn in the 1851 census? That should give his place of birth and so maybe point you in the right direction.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi all
Received in a PM from Denis, just incase any of you are looking for him:
in hartlepool in 1851 census just say,s born in scotland can,t find anything about james prio to 1847.

So, no clues there then..... :?
1841? county/in county?? That would at least be something to go on...looks like he was in Bewickshre for his marriage so a good chance he was in Scotland for 1841.

Quite a few James Gunns aged 30 in Scotland for the 1841 on Freecen (www.freecen.org.uk) - what was his given occupation in 1851?

Best wishes
Lesley

There is one on freecen who is a "Mason Journeyman " age given as 35, so anywhere between ages 35-39 He appears to be married with kids (difficult to tell with the 1841!) so may not be your guy but still might be worth a look.

Hi Denis
That particular one is in Scotland.
Its on freecen - www.freecen.org.uk
Scroll to the bottom of page and click "search the database"
Type in his name, date of birth 1810 +/- 5years

- you will see there are quite a number of them (James Gunn) - only one is a mason, but that does not mean he is your guy, just worth checking out maybe.

Best wishes
