McIntyre / Bell Marriage
Hi everyone,
I have tried to view the marriage of Hugh McIntyre and Isabella Bell on Scotlands People, unfortunately there is no image available!
Does this mean I can't order a certificate online? OR
If anyone is planning a trip to the GRO in Edinburgh I would be ever-so gratefull if they could do a look-up for me please???
Marriage: 12/05/1839 -- Hugh McIntyre and Isabella Bell / fr 4682 M Barony. Gross Data: 622/00 028* This marriage was also registed in Dalserf
Thank you
Kathy

Hi Kathy
None of the OPR images are online yet. You can order an "official" copy of the image for £10 or you could order the microfilm of the OPR from your local LDS centre and see it there, and either transcribe it or take a printout. Or I believe you may also be able to order an image directly from the LDS in Utah via their "family search" web site.
Best wishes
Lesley
It is not really a certificate, it is an entry in the Old Parish Register, so not as much infomation as you may be used to seeing in post 1855 entries.Does this mean I can't order a certificate online?

Re-McIntyre Bell marriage
Hi Lesley,
Thank you for replying. Do you know what information would be contained on the parish register for this marriage?
What I'm after is a more acurate dob for both of these people, also there place of birth. It would also be helpfull to identify both sets of parent's!
I have the census forms which show that Hugh was born in Corpach, Argyll about 1811, but his dob differs from one census to the next! I have the same problem with Isabella, except she was born in Kilchman on the Isle of Islay. I believe I have found her Death cert; this shows her parents as Duncan & Margaret Bell nee McIntyre?????
I don't have a problem purchasing the necessary document's but it would be a waste of money if they only told me what I already know.
Thank you for your help, Kind Regards
Kathy

Hi Cathy,
Most of the ones I've ordered are actually the date the Banns were registered to be called. All they usually say are the names of the groom and the bride and the parish they belong to. If you are really lucky, they even give the actual marriage date.
I've recently received one that does give the marriage date AND the minister who carried out the ceremony.
Roll on the day when these images are available online.

Hi Kathy
Fairly typical OPR entry would be from a marriage in 1819, as follows:

Fairly typical OPR entry would be from a marriage in 1819, as follows:
- John McDonald (occupation is sometimes given) & Mary Smith of this parish after proclamation of Banns were married.
- John McDonald [occupation & place of residence given] & Mary Smith, daughter of John Smith, [occupation and place given] of this parish after proclamation of Banns were married the 1st March 1819.

Re McIntyre/Bell
I would like to thank both Mary and Lesley for their help, at least I now know it's not worth wasting my money sending for the marriage cert for Hugh and Isabella.
Kind Regards

Hi Kathy
The death entries are the best way of finding some idea of parents' names for people around at that time, that is, if your folk survived until after 1855, the year in which Statutory Registration was introduced. The census data can be very useful too for knowing which areas they are likely to be found in, the place of birth, approx. age (it is pretty normal for it to vary, as you mentioned) and sometimes for working out when they died, if they appear in one census and not in the next. (although of course there are sometimes other reasons for that - mis-transcription, leaving for other countries etc.) Have you followed them through the census years?
If you need any help with finding your people in any post 1855 deaths you can always give us a shout! We're quite good most times at pointing folk in the right direction!
Best wishes
Lesley
Does the death entry not have the name of her husband on it, so giving a point of reference that she must be the one you are looking for?I believe I have found her Death cert; this shows her parents as Duncan & Margaret Bell nee McIntyre

Re Hugh&Isabella McIntyre
Hi Leslie,
I can't thank you enough for your offer of help, but I don't know if you will feel the same when I start babbling?? Here goe's:
Hugh and Isabella's children show up in the 1851 census.
Duncan McIntyre, aged 12yrs old
William McIntyre, aged 11yrs old
Margaret McIntyre, aged 9yrs old
Janet McIntyre, aged 2yrs old ------- this strange, according to LDS she was born in 1844
I don't know what happened to Duncan after the 1851 census!
William married Jane McCallum in the central district of Glasgow in 1864, Marriage cert shows Williams parents, Hugh & Isabella McIntyre, nee Bell
Margaret never married, but she did have an illegitemate son to a Martin Dempster in 1861, she went to court and won the legal right for her son to have his Fathers name ( he too was callled Martin Dempster )
Margaret died when her son was 2yrs old, he went to live with Hugh and Isabella untill he grew up and joined the Royal Navy! ( he was my ggg grandfather)
Janet, who was also known as Jessie, also had an illegitemate son called Daniel who was born in 1867, also went to live with Hugh and Isabella for some unknown reason( she was probably in service)
Janet?Jessie was a strange one, she married John Barns in 1868, it shows Hugh and Isabella are her parent's, the witnes's are her Brother William and his wife, Jane McCallum.
Janet next show up in a marriage to Archibald McKechnie in 1880, on her marriage cert it says her name was Jessie McLachlan McIntyre and or Barns?? Her parents were Hugh and Isablla McIntyre, nee Bell.
I think I may have found out when Isabella died; I have a death cert dated, 1885, aged 74. parents: Duncan Bell, Farmer and Margaret Bell, nee McIntyre. Isabella's widow was Hugh McIntyre. The informant was Jessie McKechnie!
I think I have covered all of the important bits! Hope you can help me, let me know what you think????
Kind regards
Kathy

Was the entry for Janet an extracted entry or one provided by an LDS member? If it had a number starting with C11, then it is probably right. If so, she could have died by the time the 1851 census and another baby girl was given that same name - not unusual.Hugh and Isabella's children show up in the 1851 census.

Duncan could very well be away from home after that as he was old enough to have started working and might be found in another household.
