Lost Laird.....

Post by Dennis » Wed Apr 20, 2005 11:12 pm

I have a John Laird b1821 and christened feb 10, 1822. John marries Mary Milne July 21, 1850 in Forfar, Angus. They are both still about in the 1881 census where he is a Linen Manufacturer in Forfar employing some 600 hands.

After the 1881 census I cannot find anything on the couple.

Hi Dennis

Had a handful of credits so I looked quickly for them in 1891 and they are there living in Resobie, Angus......John, Mary, Alfred, Walter and lots more...you should have no problem if you search for Alfred or Walter as there is only one of each name in Angus in 1891. Maybe this will lead you to finding more....hope so!

Best wishes
Jean

Jean. Thank you for that note. I had noticed, after posting the above, that when George Milne Laird died in 1906 that John is deceased and that apparently Mary is still on the go. Apparently George's wife Catherine Kidd, noted in his death rec has gone awol, but the informant is an inmate Mary Lawson(?)

I'll find em yet, thanks again:)

Hello All

I was just having a bit of a read through this post, and Jeans post regarding Milne in Angus struck a bit of a chord. Although Jean has a typo error regarding Rescobie, Angus. I was interested in it, due to having a Margaret Miln (sic) in my Anderson line, Margaret was christened on 8 June 1743 in Brechin, Angus. Subsequent lines, namely Robert Anderson, was born in Rescobie, Angus in 1798. Just a passing thought, and possibly of no consequence in Dennis' searching for his long losts.

Searching for: Anderson, Balks, Barton, Courtney, Davidson, Downie, Dunlop, Edward, Flucker, Galloway, Graham, Guthrie, Higgins, Laurie, Mathieson, McLean, McLuckie, Miln, Nielson, Payne, Phillips, Porterfield, Stewart, Watson

Hmm My John Laird was born in 1921 and married Mary Milne in 1850; the 1891 census ( as Jean noted ) shows John as age 73 and Mary as 57. The 1881 census shows John as 61 and Mary as 47; a 16 year difference in 1891 and a 14 year difference in 1881. The 1881 census age for John is closer to his birth year. If we go with the 1881 census then John is about 29 and Mary about 16 when they mary in 1850; so I don't know if the ages in the 1891 census are correct with respect to John as he would have to have been born about 1819 or so and either way Mary is born about 1834. Still can't locate any death rec for either John or Mary.

Dennis,

Have you checked the marriage entries of the children to narrow down the search for John or Mary's death? I see Walter married in 1901.

I take it the John Laird who died in Rescobie in 1894 age 71 isn't yours.

Nelmit. Thank you. I had looked at that one in 1894 for John but, although the parents are correct, it reads that he was married to an Ann Bush with no mention of having been married to Mary Milne. Should I assume that the the Ann Bush was a clerical error?

Hi Dennis

Couldn't put this one down. I think you've led yourself astray with the birth year of your John. I noticed in the IGI the one you've claimed is a submitted entry naming parents of Alexander and Ann and that is also the DC that you want to claim but can't quite do it.....for several reasons. The DC of that John lists him as a stone quarrier....sorry but that just doesn't fit does it? Also I checked the 1881 census and there was a John and Ann and family living in at the same address that this one died at so he's not yours!

First thing to do is let go of the notion that the parents are Alexander and Ann and go looking for another birth. Try the one in 1817. Parents are William and Catherine. Those names look mighty good to me as they were used by John in naming his children. Now be bold and go back to the death search and enter John Laird born 1817 died anywhere in Scotland between 1891 and 1906....there are only a handful but only one in Angus.....he's yours!

Me again Dennis....with some afterthoughts.....I don't want to lead you astray either by stating that the John LAIRD who died in 1904 is yours! Let me rephrase that....he is the John LAIRD who was married to Mary Milne and was a Linen Merchant and who had a son William. The other John LAIRD who was the stone quarrier also had a son named William. I'm not completely sure how you arrived at the John LAIRD generation but hopefully you will have enough data to know for certain which is the right John LAIRD for you! (Does this make any sense??) Hope so.....

Jean
