Ok, where is she? Seems to have materialised from nowhere

Hello all,

Yet another one of my wee brickwalls here. ](*,)

I've just lined the coffers of SP tracing an Eliza Wardrop(e).

The 1881 census, where I first found her, has her living at 13 Downfield Place, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh and her age as 35, giving a YOB of 1846.

Several pennies down the line I've got her marriage cert stating she was 27 when she got married in 1882 to Alexander Ramsay. A search on for her death reveals she died aged 83 years in 1938.

I got so excited, I did the sums in my head and then double checked with my calculator...woo hoo...a possible 1855 birth!

Her parents were Robert Wardrop(e) and Elizabeth Melville and they had 3 other children, Janet born in 1848 (my Gx3 grandmother), Margaret born 1849 and Robert born 1852. They come up on the IGI parent search and on the OPRs, so it would appear these people were good at getting the kiddies baptised.

Eliza doesn't feature in the OPR BUT she doesn't seem to feature for 1855/56 births either. :-k

I've done my wildcards, found the family in 1861 under the name of Wardross ( the p & ss thing going on there), have wildcarded and checked on possibles to no avail.

Have any of you any bright ideas  that can help me?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Donna

Don't know how bright they are, but ...

Is Melville Elizabeth's maiden surname or previously married name? Perhaps she brought Elizabeth Junior with her when she married Robert.

A young widow might be eager to marry. Do you have info on Robert and Elizabeth's marriage.

IGI search for Elizabeth Melville born 1846-1848 to mothers named Elizabeth, produces quite a few births and christenings.

Also, my first alternate thought on the surname was Warthrop (for what tha's worth)

Hi Donna

Have to agree with you.....I don't see her hiding anywhere either! She's there in 1861 age 6. Her father's death, the lack of an illegimate birth entry, the lack of an OPR entry in Mid Calder, the lack of any far stretch of wildcard in Mid Calder or Castle or anywhere else for that matter! All zippo for my efforts. What a disappointment :(

Sorry!

Hi Jean,

Well at least I know it wasn't just me! And like you say with Robert dying in 1857, very sad when they die so soon after a wean is born, and it's young Eliza who is the informant for her mother dying in 1872, they were good wit their record keeping...it's just where did they put this one?

Hi Frances,

I have no evidence to suggest Eliza Melville was married prior to marrying Robert Wardrop. Their eldest daughter Janet has both their names on her marriage & death cert and, going by the 1861 census, Eliza was the youngest, her father died in 1857. On her marriage cert she gives her parents as Robert Wardrope & Eliza Wardrope MS Melville.

Admittedly I haven't tried Warthrop. I'm out of credits at the mo but I've popped it on my list of things to check with my next lot of credits.

Thank you both

Donna

Hi Donna

You can try but might want to reserve your credits for other uses. I used a pretty broad wildcard approach....and a 3 years range...and didn't see a Wathrop.....even considered ones that were quite a bit more far fetched but nothing!! Hate to say I'm stumped but that's where I is

Best wishes

Morning Jean,

Thanks for looking for me, having seen your other posts, it takes something to get you stumped!

I think I know enough about Eliza to let her lie, it was just that nugget of info to get exact whereabouts of where the parents were born rather than Ratho & West Calder.

Best wishes
Donna
