coroner's reports

Post by bertiebrew » Tue Dec 05, 2006 5:39 pm

I had an ancestor who committed suicide. Is it possible to access a copy of the coroner's report? If so, where?

Hi there

Welcome to TalkingScot, home of addicts and insomniacs but brilliant solvers of family conundrums.
Don't tell some of the other posters you are from Dalkeith and only a short bus ride from the Archives. They'll all be sookin' up to you for favours.

If your relative died south of the border there might be a Coroners Report but here in Scotland its the Procurator Fiscal who handles unexpected deaths and deaths by misadventure. The only way you would know if the case was referred to the Procurator Fiscal is if there was an entry in the left hand margin marked RCE (Register of Corrected Entries) with a date, volume and page number.
If you have the certificate I think it is possible to request a copy of the Fiscals report, if available but it might not give a great deal of information which is not already on the certificate. The details of the Procurator's investigations are not available.

Enjoy your time of TalkingScot and I hope you have plenty of questions to be answered.
