Value opinions on the mother's surname.
Does it say Unkown to stepmother?
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul

Hmmm....don't think it says stepmother as that seems to be too long to fit the space. I don't think it runs into the adjacent space even though it looks like it might. I do think it says Unknown to ..........???? Besides..Unknown to Stepmother doesn't make sense as it's the son informing and these folks would be his grandparents.....

That doesn't help a bit does it :(

If you don't get an expert along to tell you what it really says then by all means request a photocopy via contact form from SP. It's amazing the clarity that is achieved that way.

Good luck!

Jean

Paul,

Try looking for the death of siblings for this person. The informant did not know the mother's surname in this case, but it doesn't mean everyone didn't know.

Hi Nina,
No siblings know i'm afraid.
I did find him on the 1851 census with his wife children and his 23yr old cousin David Houston, a poss lead i'm looking in to.
I always pay attention to childrens 2nd names that are surnames
He used the surname Rathbone for one of his youngest children, so that too could be a clue.
Looking on SP the only entry that fits his birth and parents christian names are ..
20/06/1788 YUILL THOMAS THOMAS YUILL/ELISABETH STEVEN FR1464 M GLASGOW
But that would be guess work.
Thanks again.
Paul

There is a submitted IGI record
Thomas Yool - parents Thomas and Margaret Robertson
born 22 Oct 1781
Christened 28 Oct 1781 Dundee, Angus

The age is a better fit - but the location? There are some siblings there as well - but at a quick glance I can't find him on SP - although there is 1 Thomas Yool, father Thomas on there for October 1781.
