m, f, or u

My understanding of the gender given on the OPR index is, the obvious ones m=male and f=female. If the OPR did not specify son or daughter, no assumptions were made, so u=unspecified or unknown.

Hi Joyce,

What you need to find is the death certificate of Jane Morgan (ms. Marshall). I guess you have the 1873 death certificate of Andrew Bennet Morgan, marine stoker, widower of Jane Marshall. Their marriage was in Leith. His death was in Leith. I found no obvious sign of her death on ScotlandsPeople. Son James registered the death. I found no sign of his birth on the IGI.

Do you know when she died? Could it have been pre-1855? (hence no death certificate).

Also, Andrew's parents were given as James Morgan and Catherine Morgan (ms. Murray). No sign of Andrew's birth on the IGI, but there is a probable marriage for his parents (record of banns called in both of their parishes).

JAMES MORGAN / KATHARINE MORRAY Marriage: 01 AUG 1790 Clackmannan, Clackmannan, Scotland
and
JAMES MORGAN OR MORRISON / KATHARINE MURRAY: 01 AUG 1790 Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland

All the best,

Hi Joyce,

There is another Andrew Bennet Morgan death in Leith. In 1865 Andrew Bennet Morgan, age 23 hours, son of James Cowan Morgan and Mary Darge Morgan (ms. Melrose), died in Leith. This James C Morgan is the same one as signed the other Andrew Bennet Morgan's death certificate in 1873. I take it this James C Morgan is the James Carson Morgan of c1835. The online IGI gives 6 children to James Morgan and Mary Melrose between 1863 and 1873 (there may be more later, the IGI extraction of Scottish births stops at 1874/75).

The online IGI gives
  • WILLIAM MARSHALL MORGAN - Birth: 26 NOV 1837 South Leith, Midlothian
ANDREW MORGAN - Christening: 12 DEC 1839 South Leith, Midlothian
JOAN COWAN MORGAN - Christening: 06 FEB 1842 South Leith, Midlothian
CATHRINE MURRAY MORGAN - Christening: 21 JAN 1844 South Leith, Midlothian
These children are all listed as to Andrew Bennet Morgan and Ann Marshall. This list differs slightly from the group that you listed. Plainly it is the same family, just be careful of the mother's first name, it seems to vary on different documents. From that information, her elusive death certificate could be listed as Jane/Jean/Jeanie or Ann/Anne/Annie, or some other variation.

All the best,

Andrew Patersom
