Where were James Landles parents married?

Post by emanday » Sun Jan 07, 2007 1:52 am

Just uploaded a BC for James Landles, later spelled Landels, who married a Great Aunt of mine, Mary Laing McDonald (who I didn't really know I had till Jack found her for me O:) ).

His parents Alexander Landles and Alice Crombie were married in 1880, it says, but the place looks suspiciously like Eyemouth or Evemouth. Is there a place in Scotland that might have a very similar name?

BTW just to add to the confusion, on James MC and DC his mother is shown as Alice Craig, so either Alexander got it wrong when he registered wee James birth, or the later entries are wrong!

Hi Mary,

Yes, it looks like Evemouth, but like you, I would go for Eyemouth.

There is a corresponding marriage on SP, give or take a little on the spelling.

1880 LANDELS ALEXANDER, CROMBIE ALISON, EYEMOUTH /BERWICK 739/00 0004

All the best,

Thanks Andrew. I've tried to find an English marriage for them without any success and was hoping it might be a wee place tucked away in a remote part of Scotland

I'll just have to keep trying the English records.

I'm such a wally  Eyemouth in Berwick - #-o

Got my Eyemouths and Weymouths confused, didn't I!

And guess what, my Alexander was born in 1855 [woohoo] By that time he was the youngest of four sons and I'm a happy bunny [scotland-flag]

Thanks Jean. The two wee Crombies were probably Alison's nephews or something. I've sorted out the Craig influence on James MC and DC - that was his Grandmother's maiden name.

Thanks for that Jean,

I've printed that off to do a few wee DOB calculations, but the Crombies seem to have lived very close to the Landels, (etc spellings) and I'm having trouble sorting out who belongs to whom

Alison Crombie, wife of Alexander, should have been born around 1857, but she just doesn't want to be found. I did get an Alison Craig Crombie born in 1870 and with that middle name, she has to be a younger rellie (I'm assuming here - always dangerous  ). There is a wee Crombie born in 1857, female but not named and born to a 20 year old Jane. I can't read what they have written in in place of a childs name though, so maybe the bairn died shortly afterwards. I'll look for a DC maybe, just to confirm?

Honestly, just as you are beginning to see a wee pinlight at the end of a very long dark tunnel in one line, two other lines take you up another dark tunnel (wi an even wee-er pinlight!)

Which, as I'm sure everyone else has discovered, is the certain cause of our collective insanity [drowning]

They were William Landels and Isabella Craig, married 1845 at Lamberton Toll, Berwick. On Alexander's 1855 BC there were already three sons living, but I can only find the births for Peter 1849 and William 1846, then the remainder of the kids come along later.
