Taylor Family

Post by dmd1164 » Thu Jan 11, 2007 6:38 am

Looking for some clarification on this one...

These are from SP

1 29/08/1813 TAYLOR JAMES WILLIAM TAYLOR/AGNES SHANKS FR592 M NEW MONKLAND 651/00 0002

1 13/10/1805 TAYLOR HENRY WILLIAM TAYLOR/AGNES SHANKS FR492 U SLAMANNAN 489/00 0002

I would assume these are brothers....

However when I went into IGI I got the following: No sign of James??? (It would appear that James and Henry married sisters (James & Elizabeth Garvie) and (Henry & Margaret Garvie).

Although there is time between Margaret and Elizabeth to squeeze James in (just barely), and, eventhough their fathers AND their mothers had the same first and last names, I don't think James is of the same family.

In the IGI, all 13 children born to William and Agnes are born in Slamannan, Stirling. James alone was born in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire.

A pedigree citation on the IGI indicates this information is included in someone's family tree. Caution is wise when not using original documents.

Brothers marrying sisters is not an uncommon occurence, so sometimes things do get a bit tangled. None of the names involved here are unusual, so it may take a bit more poking around to link up the right people.

Slamannan is mentioned quite often here, so I think you are in for some good direction now that dawn is approaching in Britain.

There is mention (in extracted records) of other children baptised in New Monkland - they have similar names and similar dates to the Slamannan children

viz Elisabeth 23 oct 1814 (Elisabeth 13 Nov 1814)
Lillias 28 Apr 1816 (Lilias 27 Mar 1816)
Janet 15 Aug 1824 (Janet 26 Jun 1824)
marrion 3 sep 1826 (Marrion 19 July 1826)

So it looks very much like multiple baptism of the same children OR some very good calculations by close relatives as to birth or baptism dates.

There only seems to be a marriage in Slamannan on the IGI - You could look for another marriage on SP

There are 4 (probably one died as an infant) extracted records for an Agnes Shanks born 1778-1789 from Slamannan. Also a William Taylor 1868.

A look at the Hugh Wallis site shows only female births in New Monkland at this time.

Hopefully somebody will confirm that, in this case, only female births were recorded on the IGI but SP will have indexed all. I'll have a look at the film next time I'm at 'The Mitchell'

I would go by what SP says.

Kind regards,

Hi Donna and Trish1:

I don't currently have any time left on my SP points to have a look at the records, but I did some digging around. I used ALL districts in the following searches, because no marriage came up for either Stirling or Lanark.

Marriages of William Taylor & Agnes * 1800 - 1810 = 3
Marriages of William Taylor & Agnes Shanks 1800 - 1810 = 1
Marriages of William Taylor & Agnes Shanks Feb 1804 = 1

Births/Baptisms naming William Taylor & Agnes * 1800 - 1854 = 92
Births/Baptisms naming William Taylor & Agnes Shanks 1804 - 1826 = 20 accounting for births AND some baptisms.

Trish1 wrote

marrion 3 sep 1826 (Marrion 19 July 1826)
So it looks very much like multiple baptism of the same children OR some very good calculations by close relatives as to birth or baptism dates.

On SP there are 2 records for each of the girls within the few month periods indicated by Trish. Lillias likewise appears within the same months Trish lists, but on SP, her name is spelled as Lillias and as Lilias.

Seems you're going to sharpen up the credit card and dig in at SP

Wonderful stuff - many thanks to those with more experience - it certainly makes it easier for us novices.

Gives me something more to hone in on.

Thank you all...

It's a pity that there aren't any images for the OPR's.

Also - SLAMANNAN and NEW MONKLAND what distance separates these places?
