MOWAT FAMILY - WHERE ARE ALL THEIR RECORDS??

Post by alimail » Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:50 pm

Hello there, hoping someone can help me again!!
i'm researching the Mowat line of my friend's family. The only listing I can find is on the 1901 Census, where James, Margaret and their 4 children are all living in Rutherglen. I cannot find ANY of the birth certificates for the children, or a marriage certificate, even using the double T spelling of Mowat.
Any ideas?

What's Margaret's maiden name?

There are loads of Mowat/Mowatts listed on SP.

Margaret was born 1867, illegitimate, named Margaret Mcgown Murdoch, to Jane Murdoch. No mention of absent father!
What bothers me is that i can't find a single birth certificate of any of the Mowat children - even tho they are all alive and well in 1901. Is it possible the parents didn't bother registering any of them??

What are the names, ages and birthplaces given for them in the 1901 census?

Have to say - can't see a marriage between a James Mowat ( including logical wildcards) and Margaret Murdoch/Murdock.

Just a query - how do you know Margaret's maiden name?

Another wild thought - could she have registered the weans under her maiden name?

I found Margaret's death certificate. She died in 1916 and is listed as James Mowat's wife. Her mother was Jane Murdoch, later Mcculloch, no father named.
Maybe James and margaret just pretended to be married....the friend I'm doing the research for, David Hearton has a several unmarried fallen women in his pedigree - another one is the icing on the cake!!!! Ester Mowat was his Granny.

I don't think she registered them in her maiden name - Ester was definitely a Mowat.
Got to do the ironing now...my charlady predecessors would be proud of me!
Will return as soon as the Master has some nicely starched and pressed shirts for tomorrow.

Hi Ali,

Here are the youngest three - beware of the spelling.

MOAT, Samuel Murdoch, 1900, Rutherglen
MOAT, Esther Kennedy, 1897, Rutherglen
MOAT, John, 1893, Rutherglen

These should give you a place and date to seek the marriage.

All the best,

AndrewP
