Trying to trace Scottish family - McCann

Post by SacredG » Wed Jan 31, 2007 6:49 pm

Hi All

Im currently doing my family tree and having completed my UK side upto 1850's ive decided to start on my Grand Father, all i know he was called Edward McCann and born in Lanarkshire area 01/12/09.

Ive noticed on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk that the births only go upto 1901. Quite frustrating! He moved to UK and married my Gran in 1933, I have his marraige registration and death reg from uk records.

So ive hit a brick wall already! How do i go about tracing his exact birth place and further rellies?

Thank you

Regards

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Welcome to Talking Scot :D ! I've been a member for only a few weeks and already I've received a lot of help - don't worry about brick walls, I'm sure there are people here who can help you over them!

You said that you have your grandad's death registration from the UK, but you don't say if this is Scottish or not. This might give you his parents names [and maybe occupations]. This means that you could search on ScotlandsPeople for people with those names marrying each other in the County of Lanark (Marriages go up to 1930) - you could narrow down the search to say, 1880 to 1910 as a starting point.

Assuming your grandparents married in Scotland, you could take your gran's parent's names from the marriage record you have and search for the marriage of her parents, too. This would give you an indication of where they were married and when. This then allows you to look for Census records and death certificates, which would get you back another generation.

If your grandparents didn't marry in Scotland, I'm not sure what the best way of tracking them down would be. Over to everyone else..............

best wishes

I have only got his death registration, he died in UK in 1976 where he had lived from 1933.

He also married in Leicester 1933, again i only have a registration of this.

So basically i need to send of for the actual certificate (marriage or death) which will tell me about his address in scotland and then lead me to more rellies?

Hi SacredG

Since you have an exact date of birth in Scotland for him you can contact GROS and order an extract... http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... flet2.html ....(or alternatively..not sure just where you live....visit New Register House in Edinburgh or Park Circus in Glasgow and view the current records for yourself that would contain this birth.....or....another choice...hope for some kind person to look for you or....final choice? Pay a professional to obtain the info and forward it to you\!!) This Scottish birth record would be most valuable to you as it will contain both parents names and where they were married and occupations. An English marriage certificate is only going to give you his father's name and occupation.

Best wishes

Oh almost forgot........the online ScotlandsPeople birth indexes now go to 1906. Each year one more year is added to the indexes and images that are accessible online to keep in line with the closure limitations. (100 years for births)

Best wishes
