ADMIN GROUP WARNING, WARNING, WARNING !!!!!

Post by DavidWW » Wed Feb 07, 2007 2:20 pm

I'm reposting Marilyn's warning from January..........

WARNING MESSAGE TO THE MEMBERS OF TALKINGSCOT FROM THE ADMIN GROUP.

AS WITH ANY WEBSITE ON THE WWW, FROM TIME TO TIME, WE HAVE THE DISPLEASURE OF "UNWELCOME MEMBERS" JOINING OUR SITE!

WE THEREFORE ADVISE YOU TO READ THE FOLLOWING ADVICE:

Never ever click on a link that sounds "too good to be true", or appears in any way doubtful given the context of the post, particularly in a case, where a member only joined TS. Any link you see anywhere on the web that you are unsure of, err on the safe side and don't trust it. There are so many of these types out there trying to plant these trojans in the PCs of many people.

TalkingScot Administration Group

The posts in question that led to this repeat post relate to a new member - Abaeormenlem28 - who earlier today made four posts containing links to apparant porn websites.

One member, by inadvertantly clicking on one the links, has had their PC infected by a virus.

That may or may not have been the purpose of these posts, - it is well known that porn sites are often themselves infected with viruses, trojans and worms, - the operators of the porn websites couldn't care less :!:

IF IN DOUBT DON'T CLICK ON A LINK!!!

The AdminGroup and Moderators will always act as quickly as possible to quarantine and delete questionable posts. Among us we have reasonable time zone coverage, and normally catch these numpties quickly.

Hello Members Of TalkingScot

This evening while many of you were fast asleep, I had to deal with another one of these "unwelcomed guests"

[soapbox] THESE TYPES REALLY DO NEED TO GET A LIFE.

To the new members of TalkingScot, please be careful of the links you click on provided by a new member. We are not speaking about those of you, who are here to research your family tree. Its the new members, who may have a slightly different name. I'll give you some examples in a moment. The AG and Moderators of TS are aware of a certain pattern these types of members are using to try and disgrace our board, for their own personal gain. Whatever that may be? So please pardon a sudden shock if you happen to be unlucky enough to view a thread which may have one of these links posted, such as  "amazing videos" These videos are not amazing, they may contain a virus!

So don't click on any link, which does not appear to be genealogy related. If anyone has any doubt, then please contact a member of the AG or Moderator.

The names these members are using are not common everyday names, such as John from Paisley or Jane from Johnstone. Here's a few examples of past user names we've had to delete

michmichime
Funatikf
Pesh47
asmirnoffman
Andapese94
Anooementap1

Hopefully, this message will be read by all our members and will help everyone be more aware of the danger of these "unwanted member's messages"

Regards
Marilyn

David,

It may be too cumbersome but could you post a warning on each Topic.
I know most of your members are aware of this problem but when I first joined up I didn't always check everything on the site. I now never automatically click on links unless I know who the poster is.

Thanks to you, Marilyn and others for there perception of problems

Can I also suggest that people don't post their email addresses as some "bots" can pick up the email address and spam it. If you do post your email I suggest using brackets round the @ or replace it with AT. For example: a[@].b.com or a[AT]b.com.

It's long since been AdminGroup and Moderator practice to edit an email address of the format anyone@whakens.org to anyoneATwhakens.org :!:

I've just come on to the site to find 3 posts from Abenmemap5 - clearly one of those we've had warnings about.
Have any of the moderators picked them up yet?

Hi Meg,

I noticed too and have sent a pm to AndrewP but no one seems to be about at the moment.
What a sad way to spend Saturday night.

Paula
Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!
