I must have confused one James Veitch with another. I knew about the one you said which is on the mc of James & Sarah. I made an even bigger mistake

when I thought that James' parents, from the dc in 1950 of Adam Veitch & Agnes Bowe were the ones to use. I recall posting something about 'Reputed Father' when the father's name is included on the record; I think it was in the General Discussion forum. So, I probably have a
LOT of Veitch folk to remove from my tree as the lady Christian Veitch is not a result of the Adam Veitch & Agnes Bowe group.
How should I handle the 'reputed father' issue, do I simply state that James was the Illegitimate son of John Forbes & Christian Veitch?

Actually, on a re-read it's Christina not Christian....... and you need to check out that FreeBMD lead that I gave you above for a possible death for Sarah.
How to handle "reputed" father?, - if all you have is the info there is at the moment, then show as illegitimate, but put in a note on the origin of the info.
But before you do that, spend a few credits locating the birth of James, - it's exactly where the census info says it should be, including the 1881 census ......

You also need to tie in the 1901 census entry, i.e. confirming that it is your family, however much of a match there appears to be, by locating the birth register entry of one of the kids, in order to show that the mother's maiden surname, and the place and date of the marriage match, - Calista Bell Guthrie VEITCH should be easy to find

PS So did James really marry a second time
