JOHN CUNNINGHAM

Post by Jean Smith » Sun Feb 11, 2007 12:40 pm

I am trying to find the death of my great-grandfather, John CUNNINGHAM, born 11 September, 1846 in Springburn, Glasgow.

He was a potter and in 1881 census he is living at 8 Summerfield St, Glasgow with his wife, Margaret and his children.

In 1891 census his wife and children are at 161 Castle St, Glasgow and she is listed as Married.

In 1901 census his widow and family are living at 246 Albert Rd, Woolwich, London.

I can't find John on either census.

On my grandfather's marriage certificate in 1927 John is listed as deceased.

Searches at New Register House have not revealed when he died.

Can anyone help??

Hello Jean

And welcome to TalkingScot.

Looking at your problem rellies I wonder if you have tried variations in the spelling of Cunningham.
There is one John Cunningham death in Eastwood in 1892 within 3 years of his date of birth.
Remember that the person registering his death may not know his exact date of birth and give a wrong age to the Registrar.
There are 5 Castle Streets in Glasgow which makes location a bit difficult.
It is possible that he could have been in the City Hospital or have left his wife and be living apart (I have this is one family line).
Perhaps he left Glasgow to look for work in London?

Try searching using wildcards for Cun*in*h*m* in case he has been entered under a different spelling.

Hi Jean,
Welcome to Talking Scot! Could this be John in 1891?

Backer(?) Lane, Brampton, Derbyshire
John McOfern, Head, Married, 52, Potters Turner, born in Brampton, Derbyshire
John Cunningham, Boarder, Married, 43, Potters Turner, born in Glasgow, Scotland

John's age was written 43, then crossed out and 40 written in later on the side. It was indexed as if he were 40

I was startled to see that the head of household is indexed as John Redfearn... maybe that's who he is, but it sure doesn't look like that to me...

He's still there in 1901, now it looks like Barker Lane :-) But his age is back to looking right.

Chesterfield, Brampton, Derbyshire
William Bond, head, Married, 79, born in Brampton, Derbyshire
Sarah Bond, wife, married, 77, born in Halifax, Yorkshire
John Cunningham, boarder, 54, Potter, born in Scotland

All the best,
Sarah

High Jean,

Not that it helps your search much...
He was a potter and in 1881 census he is living at 8 Summerfield St, Glasgow with his wife, Margaret and his children
That's where my grandfather George Stewart was born in 1882, but his parents, four older siblings and an aunt and uncle were all there in 1881 Census.

 Our rellies were neighbours
