What did he do?

Post by Jamboesque » Mon Mar 05, 2007 3:14 am

Hi Folks.

Another deciphering puzzle for those interested.

I cannot figure out what my target, William Jolly does for an occupation other than he wasn't qualified or good enough to do it for real as the only thing I can make out is that he was an assistant.........but of what?

This is the second time I've asked the nice people here for help on deciphering and on both occasions it was for a certificate from Aberdeen !!!!! :?

On the previous example I made comments about trying to squeeze one more certificate out from an ailing nib or that the scribe/registrar had been imbibing but it seems the practice was endemic, as most of the certificates from Aberdeen seem to be very poorly/uncearly written

I'm not quite sure what happened I followed the rules and thought I uploaded the file into the Help with Deciphering Album.

I've just reloaded it again, possibly the previuos file had a ..tiff instead of .tiff ending which may have confused it.

The dialogue box now says that the upload was successful and is awaiting authorisatiion from the mods.

Hi Jamboesque,

What a horrible image! I agree with Andrew in that it is some kind of seller's assistant...but what kind?

Not that it's any help, but it looks like his father is a Mechanical Engineer and the first letter of your William's occupation looks a bit like that "M", and Looking at some of the other writing, I'm getting...

M....rie - seller's assistant ...but I doubt it's anything like that!

Sorry

Regards,
Anne H

Hi

I wondered if it could be wine seller's assistant. However what it looks most like is Rowie seller's assistant but I'm sure that even then there were no assistant rowie sellers!!!!!

Anne

Rowie= form of bread roll peculiar to the Aberdeen area, very flat and high in fat and salt, death to the coronary arteries.

Whatever it is, did he work for his future father-in-law ?

That capital :?: , - see the "M" for his father :!: (Are they the same capital??)

The birth record for his bride shows her father as an "Ironmoulder (Journeyman)".
