Marriages

Post by Jacquie » Tue Mar 06, 2007 3:24 am

Hi,
Does anyone know if proof of marriage had to be shown at birth registration or did the register just take their word for it?
I have a family where the child's birth registration shows a marriage date of Dec 27, 1878 in Glasgow, I can't find the marriage and both their death certificates show single. They had at least 2 children.
Thanks
Jacquie

Hi Jacquie,

I have two possibilities to offer you.

(1) She was unmarried, but did not want to admit that.

(2) There was a marriage, but it was an irregular marriage that had never been declared and registered.

As it was declared on the children's death certificates that their mother was unmarried, theory #1 above looks to be correct. At that time, proof of marriage seems not to have been a requirement when declaring the marital status for the children's birth certificates.

All the best,

AndrewP

Would it be possible that the marriage wasn't registered until January 1879, since they didn't get married until Dec. 27?

Quite a few of mine are registered in January of the following year. They seemed to like getting married on or just before 31st December!

In fact some of mine only got found after I got the "heads up" here on TS :D
